RocketsPimp - Why not play him this season if a deal can't be worked out? Why pay him the remainder of the $16mil and let him watch TV.

OT, trust me, I want Hakeem to play. Now way do I want Hakeem to be let go and paid to sit on his behind. I think he can still contribute and would prefer to have him on the court. I only meant I would rather they buy him out and maintain his rights, rather than waive him where another team could pick him up.

The Rockets shouldn't have to pay his salary if he doesn't want to play for them. If he would rather play for the Lakers then the Lakers should pay his salary. It would be ridiculous for the Rockets to give Hakeem and the Lakers such an enormous gift. We would be handing both parties another ring.

My question is: Can Hakeem and the Rockets agree to waive his contract so the Rockets wouldn't have to pay him. Does the NBA and the player's association care? This would be possible if the NBA were part of the real world.

Hakeem is getting his money whether he plays or not. The player's association has made sure to protect the vet's of the league with guarantee's in their contracts.

I honestly don't think CD and Co. are going to simply let Hakeem go to sign anywhere he pleases...at least for the duration of this season. It wouldn't be a wise decision to pay him the rest of his contract and renounce his rights so that a contender like the Lakers could sign him and play him this season. The prudent thing to do from a Rockets standpoint would be to waive him(if an agreement can't be reached) and hold onto his rights until the season is over.
