WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A mass of small volcanic rocks nearly the size of Belgium has been discovered floating off the coast of New Zealand.

The stretch of golf-ball-size pumice rocks was first spotted this week by a New Zealand air force plane about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) northeast of Auckland. The rocks stretch for about 26,000 square kilometers (10,000 square miles).

A navy ship took scientists to the rocks Thursday night. Naval Lt. Tim Oscar says the rocks appeared a brilliant white under a spotlight, like a giant ice shelf.

He says it's the "weirdest thing" he's seen in 18 years at sea.

Scientists say the rocks likely spewed up in an eruption by an underwater volcano. They don't believe the eruption is connected to the onshore ash eruption this week of another volcano, Mount Tongariro.

The Defence Force says the mass of rocks stretches 250 nautical miles by 30 nautical miles.

Pumice is made from lava and water and is very lightweight, so it poses no danger to ships. Pumice has a variety of uses: as an ingredient in concrete, polishes and scrubbing cleaners; to stone wash jeans and exfoliate skin.

 

Is there someone whose job it is to be able to compare masses of whatever to countries or states?

 

Yeah it's crazy there are people who believe this stuff. There was this pretty cute girl I dated, but she was waaaaaaaaaay too into the idea of secret societies ruling the world among other crazy things (dinosaurs not existing ) like that. She would use "science" to prove her points, but wouldn't listen to research that might disprove a point. It's like she was stuck in this world of the nebulous "they/them" being in control and "they" don't want you to know the truth.

Interestingly enough Thru the Wormhole had a great episode this week about the human brain and how our brain's wiring tends to promote this sort of thought process.

This situation reminds of Harold Camping who was calling the end of the world last year. When it didn't come, he reschedule Armageddon to happen later. In March, he finally said "I was wrong.", after taking in millions from naive people to spread the message.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A 6.2-magnitude earthquake killed at least 87 people and injured over 400 others in northwestern Iran on Saturday, state TV said.

Iran's main news channel said the quake hit the towns of Ahar, Haris and Varzaqan in East Azerbaijan province at 4:53 p.m. local time (GMT 12:23), also damaging hundreds of homes.

The TV quoted Khalil Saei, local Crisis Committee chief, as saying that 30 people were killed in Ahar, 40 in Varzaqan and 17 others in Haris.

The broadcast said at least 60 villages sustained damage ranging from 50 to 80 percent, while 4 other villages had been totally leveled to the ground.

The TV said at least three aftershocks — measuring 6.0, 4.7 and 4.1 — jolted the same area and were felt in a wide region near the Caspian Sea.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. It experiences at least one earthquake every day on average, although the vast majority are so small they go unnoticed

TOKYO (Reuters) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 hit northern Japan on Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The epicenter of the quake was off the coast of Hokkaido in the Sea of Okhotsk, the agency said, adding that no tsunami warning had been issued. The quake was rated 3 on the Japanese seismic scale of 1-7. There were no reports of immediate damage.

 

The guy has not given a warning yet.He just said be ready for when he does.Supposedly when they crank up HAARP he will give a 104 hour warning.

People that follow him on facebook say that messages disappear and reappear .. I think he is just some kid that can hack his fb page.That's how he created the illusion of predicting the Japan tsunami.
