I hate it when they skirt just under florida like that. It's usually an ominous sign.

It must really suck to live in Cuba, with all of that hurricane action.

    Fixed.

The weather service we use here at the ol' pollution producer says they are not in agreement with the NHC. They believe the track will be much more westward, over Jamaica, then skirt the Yucatan. We'll see who is right

This was formerly 94L, the one that I said bore watching a couple days ago. Unless this stays over Cuba a significant period and then hops over towards Florida like Fay, Gustav will be our first major hurricane of the year and, lucky us, it's path by tomorrow will likely have us square in its crosshairs.

I hate to say it with this one, but the models will begin to adjust and the upper level steering currents the next few days are set to push this one more west than north. Now, if the steering currents hold, it will probably turn Gustav north as it enters the Gulf. If not, we could be looking at a serious storm aiming at the Texas coast.

There are two spots of particularly warm deep water in the Gulf at the moment. If Gustav stays south and takes a path more like the one's projected by the GFDL and one of the other dynamic models, he'll pass near or over both. The same type of warm water eddy is what spurred the rapid intensification of Rita and Katrina in 2005.

Wouldn't it figure? I'm leaving to go out of town this weekend? Crap.

Like somebody said, every tropical threat always has a model aiming to Houston...let's see if your prediction is right. I say it will hit upper Gulf Coast (Texas/Lousiana border)

At this point, around 2 weeks away from THE END OF HOUSTON AND MANKIND AS WE KNOW IT (as Dr. Neil Frank will no doubt bill Gustav), this thread kind of reminds me of this:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qLlUgilKqms&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qLlUgilKqms&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

... But yes, thanks for the super advanced warning, anyway. :)

Haha, what's with all the hate on Neil Frank? Is he really that dramatic? I don't remember him being all that bad, but then again, I was in Austin when Rita came, so I didn't see any of his coverage. What exactly was he saying?

even though it was fairly evident that Rita was going to hit the Sabine River area, he was wishing that it was coming our way.

That's why I am loading up on batteries and flashlights and gas, and propane and paper plates because it's coming our way, even though it may not be.
