That and airing Who Wants to Be a Millionaire every damn night. It showed that you could beat ER, Friends and Emmy nominated dramas and comedies basically airing Springer on prime time. It also introduced the objectively ugliest car in the last 35 years with those Pontiac Aztek commercials in the finale.
That was electro-shock therapy for a country that waited a quarter-century too late to incorporate diversity and address bigotry in their cultural and (admittedly brand new) media consciousness. It's why despite inferior production and narrative impact of Lucy or Seinfeld it still has to be ranked right there with them. Nowadays it'd just exist for validating cross-cultural resentment and shock value (like Dre and NWA sticking the N-word into rap music and black media culture in the late '80s), so I don't think it's all that necessary.
I'm assuming since championship boxing was on broadcast television before Tyson and Holyfield went to premium cable then PPV in the late '80s there'd be some moments there.
This is the final seconds of the fight that ended my interest in boxing. Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini's was the winner. Incredibly brutal slugfest. Despite being mortally wounded, Duk Koo Kim manages to get up off the canvas and stand before permanently losing consciousness. They drained 1300 cc of blood from his brain at the hospital. IIRC, 15-round bouts went out the window shortly after this. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Mgqk3X4FoBM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
