i thought this might be fun:

who are the greatest rox ever, by position, and can our current players ever be better than them?

    i'll start:

    greatest rox ever, by position

    PG: john lucas
    - lukie was hell...absolute hell
    SG: vernon maxwell
    - i'd say clyde, but i think max outperformed him career contribution wise
    SF: mario elie
    - this was a tough one. lots of others have greater numbers, but for what he brought to his teams, i don't think there was anyone better.
    PF: elvin hayes
    - another toughie, because of the recent memories of otis thorpe. but, when i think about it, thorpe was just a great complimentary player. hayes was "the man".
    C: (h)akeem olajuwon
    - is there an explanation necessary? not only the greatest center, he is the greatest rocket.

    COACH: rudy tomjanovich
    - although i really and truly think he is/was overrated as a coach, there is no denying this fact: 2 rings.

    assuming our current squad is

    francis
    mobley
    posey
    griffin
    yao

can they be better than any of the "greatest rockets ever"?

i think francis could end up being better than john lucas.

i think mobley could end up being better than maxwell.

posey...that's a tough one. he just doesn't, from what i've seen, have the same "fire" that elie had. but, posey may find ways to contribute to the rockets that mario never did.

eddie griffin, no. as much as i like griffin, he'll never be "the man" on this team, so he'll never even have the opportunity to be better than "1406 hayes street"

yao ming, yes. he can be better than hakeem IF he ever decides to play aggressively. if that happens he'll be one the 2 or 3 greatest players ever.

jeff van gundy, yes. it's all a matter of bringing the rings, though. and given the potential of this team, jvg could end up with 4 or more rings before it's all said and done.

PG: Lucas - Francis could be better in every aspect except passing . Lucas was a #1 pick for a reason.

SG: Calvin Murphy - Cat is my favorite player but he will never be a hall of famer.

SF: Rudy T - He was awesome and Posey will never be half the shooter Rudy T was.

PF: Barkley - I would Moses in this position in the modern NBA but Moses played center for us and Barkely is a future hall of famer. Griffin can't touch either one of them. Heck, I would be happy if Griffin turned into Thorpe.

Center: Dream - Ming will never be as good as Dream. Dream dominated Kareem in his second year in the league. Ming currently can't dominate anyone. I doubt Ming will even be as good as Moses.

Did Yao Ming got 27/18 against Spurs one game? I remember Steve Smith said after the game "He did that against three 7 footers?"

    LOL!

as i get older, my memory gets foggier. maybe it's 1706 Hayes Street.

you wouldn't remember this one (since you would have been up north), but back in the day, there were Yellow Cab commercials where The Big "E" (elvin hayes) was the spokesperson. anyway, the commercials would always end with hayes outdoors, about 25 feet from a basketball goal, saying "1706 Hayes Street", then flipping the ball over his shoulder and into the basket....

that, and he's probably a lesbian...

oh, so that was like the famous Bill Russell commercial with the hook shot. isn't that the one were they were trying to get Bill to due a near miss, but he kept making it, so they ended up going with an ending with Bill and the sounds of the crew in the background laughing after he makes another one.

    1406

    Hays St.

    Always played it during wrestling.

Anyway try Hays instead of Hayes and see what you get. That's how the street name is spelled.

Francis' defensive is already better than Lucas'.

The Big E glory days with the Rocks was at the 5 not the 4. Sampson might be the better choice here.

    No Worries:

you rank ralph sampson ahead of otis thorpe? thorpe was a 20/10 player with a ring.
