I never got to see half these guys in their prime so I have to go with stockton. He was a true point guard that made everyone better and played at such a high level for almost 2 decades. Hes a smart ball player he knows how to win. He never won a ring but that shouldnt take away from his greatness. Did I read that right Steve Francis in a poll for the best PG ever? wow
They're all good..... Bob Cousy. John Stockton. Magic Johnson. Gary Payton........ But GP and JS didn't win championships.
magic johnson is the best ive ever seen but i imagine cousy and robertson are somewhere up there..my first impression was that west was a 2 guard with his career 27 ppg and we must not forget his infamous quadruple double with 44 points 12 rebs 12 assts and 10 blocks at only 6'2 but maybe im wrong
I think Pistol did play a lil PG here and there. Not for certain though. I think its between Magic and O. There wasn't anything Magic did that O didn't do (besides win titles). My gut feeling tells me to go with O. I would be interested to hear someone's opinion that actually got to watch both play. JoeBarelyCares?
I didn't know the BiG O played point but then again I wasn' around when he was playing. But if he did played PG all his career than a man avg. a triple double for a whole season is pretty good in my books. It's a toss up b/t Magic and Stockton. Both are the types of PG a team needs but i guess it just comes down to preferece: either you want the flashiness of magic or the hard worker in stockton.
Yeah, do some reading about his stats. They were nasty! You might not like his style though since he was a very methodical ball handler; smooth and easy jump-shot. Not much flare compared to todays guards. But, all that matter back then was putting the ball in the basket. Today, it doesn't matter, as long as you look good missing.
Oscar Robertson is the best point guard to ever play in the NBA. If they kept assists in the old days like they do today, Stockton (or anyone else for that matter) would not even be close to Oscar's career total. Bob Cousy is a close second. He was the first true point guard in NBA history. Just watch ESPN Classic when they show old Celtics games to get a feel for how good Cousy was. He was one of those rare players (as Oscar Robertson was) who always new where every player was on the court at all times.
I hate to say it but you cann't give Stockton the greatest point guard award. He never won a championship. I know championships are a team accomplishment but if he was the greatest point guard of all times he would have led his team to one.
Damn. I'll pretend I didnt see Nate Archibald's name on that list. Remember, he was the only player to lead the league in both scoring and assists in a season (34.0 ppg, 11.4 apg in 1972-73).
