Yeah, I agree that calling him a musician is a stretch, but come on...clearly one of, if not the the most prolific and creative rap artist/producers ever.
A musician (or instrumentalist) is a person who plays a musical instrument or is musically talented. Anyone who composes, conducts, or performs music may also be referred to as a musician. Musicians can specialize in any musical style, and some musicians play in a variety of different styles. Seems like he fits the technical definition to me. And to be fair, he's more than just a rapper. But I agree, it's not the timeless, technically advanced musician that most people associate the word with.
I don't think it's a stretch. An MPC is a musical instrument and flipping samples is an art form within itself. Kanye is arguably the best ever at it. I know everyone doesn't vibe with Kanye, and personally I think he's an arrogant fool. But his talent and musicianship is undeniable IMO. Audio engineers, producers, mixing engineers etc are definitely musicians. I don't think the masses really understand the impact that they have on the music that we listen to everyday.
Music = Melody + Harmony + Rhythm. Rap has the rhythm, but the other two components are usually either missing completely or severely lacking. So yeah, as a professional musician myself, I have a hard time calling rappers "musicians".
Kanye isn't a guy you give beats to and he just sends in some bars. He makes beats, produces his songs, and raps on them. Only haters try to call Kanye anything but a musician.
He doesn't "make" beats, he samples them from people who've already made them. That's like me quoting your post and claiming I made it. Clyde Stubblefield makes beats.
Disagree with you brother. Wholeheartedly. Sampling is taking something that's already been made, and changing it into something entirely different.
Graduation is still to this day one of my fave albums. Not even as close to the fan I use to be of his, but damn his show at TC with Jay Z I swear is a top 5 ever for me, and I've been to hundreds and hundreds of concerts. He's a Queen douche still though. Might give it a whirl on Google Play when it drops, if I remember.
Same. I absolutely loved College Dropout, but for whatever reason never bothered to check out any of his other stuff. Maybe I should have.
