This seemed like a possibility right after the Shaq trade went down and Payton was adament about leaving the team. It would have made much more sense for the Lakers to trade him to us for the trade exception, as that is much more appealing than buying him out. However, he's cooled off on his desire to leave the team and it appears he'll remain a Laker.
