Absinthe was a pretty good show that we saw at Cesars last time we went. I don't think you going to find any free rooms, and if you did it would not be a place you would want to stay. I have stayed at the Palazzo the last few time I have gone and that place is great- would highly recommend.
you can get free rooms anytime is vegas. but it depends on what you play and how much. and definitely can't be a straight hit and run player. btw poker doesn't accumulate comp pts well at all so if that's the only thing you plan on playing, you probably won't get offered any free rooms.
are you going with friends only? gf? vegas has something to do for everyone depending on the reason you're going. couples trips their are completely different then going with your friends haha.
If you're a club kid it matters, or if you want to see a popular show that takes off early in the week. That's about the only difference. You'll find places that are open but not the popular clubs, and you might run into an off night with a big show like Love, or O. I actually prefer early in the weekdays, but I've kind of been there done that with the shows and clubs. Especially in the Summer when I can actually get a spot at the pool. Getting a spot at the 5 dollar tables at NYNY is a perk of coming early in the week as well. That would be one thing I would recommend to newbies who are going longer than 24 hours. You really need that time to go to the pool and relax for a second. If not you'll get burnt out on the strip quick after the first day 1/2. Also... cabs are your friend. Budget that in. The next hotel might look close but its freaking far, and you'll kill yourself physically if you try to walk the entire strip during the day.
It kinda sucks that your first time in Vegas with friends is gonna come on a weekday. Is there any particular reason you planned it like that? The only reason I say that is because it's your first time. You haven't been to any clubs or pools when they're really popping on weekends. That's an experience in and of itself.
