Since the theme of this thread is depressing, here are the reality checks.

    1. We are gambling on a QB whose worth a 7th round pick and also one got benched last year in favor of Johnny football.

    2. We have a good WR whose quit on a loose ball fumble and got yelled by his angry teammates.

    3. Our often injured RB is still trying to learn to be a better teammate.

    4. Finally, this could be more depressing : James Casey is available, whose got cut by the eagles and still could be better than any TE in our current roster.

After years of "wait till next season"...it's not even that right now. It's wait for sometime after that. Hopefully.

Reality check for the reality check...

Mallet was gotten for a conditional 7th rounder, meaning it will likely end up a 6th if Mallet starts enough games. It was such a low pick because the trade was completed after training camp and pre-season. That is when Mallet's value was at its absolute lowest. NE likely wanted upwards of a 3rd or more prior to the draft that year.

    Lets talk reality then.

Matt Schaub got traded for a sixth round pick from the Raiders.

Fritz got traded for a conditional 7th rounder which can become a 6th also like Mallets from the Jets.

Please ask any Raiders fan or Jets fan to share with us their joyful expectations about these 2 QBs.

Look, I am not saying Mallets for sure won't be the next Montana (on a second thought, I think I should), but please try to be more rational when setting your expectation.

Its not like we are stealing some high ceiling talents from the Patriots. They let go of Mallet just like we let go of Schaub and Fritz.

This. Ugh. It's sad how bad the 2013 draft turned out! Can't believe--and this is verified, there is no "waiting 3 years to evaluate" but 6 (!!!!!) players likely won't even play a down or make any dent in games for the Texans!!! The only hope is Quessenberry, and given his health issues, is a major unknown. All the others are garbage, and the one guy that would've been serviceable, we let go (Chris Jones). Brilliant. >clap clap<

My pessimism hinges on our ability to have good drafts. Hopefully the B'OB era is different, but 2014 is still a major wild card.

And with the Titans and Jags getting better this offseason I don't think we can pencil in a 4 - 2 division record like last year.

That's the spirit, let's not be optimistic and excited all because someone wants to be a "non-homer"

They still need a 3rd safety. They use a 3 safety formation often. Apparently tbe Texans were trying to sign Lewis but he said he didnt want to be the 3rd safety.

A 3rd safety can be found in the late rounds of the draft or a street FA like Manning was. Not really a priority imo.

Not a high priority but until they find a safety as good as Lewis was last year, still a bummer. That 3rd safety is on the slot WRs and TEs a lot. Might as well be a starter

The talent level appears to have declined in the offseason. Who is the addition that the fans should be excited about? Painted into a financial corner the Texans essentially did nothing but lose talent.

Lost QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, added QB Brian Hoyer
Lost S Kendrick Lewis, added S Rahim Moore
Re-signed QB Ryan Mallett, OT Derek Newton, CB Kareem Jackson, LB Jeff Tarpinian, WR Damaris Johnson, S Eddie Pleasant
Traded QB Case Keenum for a 7th round pick
Lost WR Andre Johnson, LB Brooks Reed, G Cody White, NT Jerrell Powe, QB Thad Lewis

Still free agents: NT Ryan Pickett, S Danieal Manning, DE Tim Jamison, LB Akeem Dent, G Cody White, NT Jerrell Powe

So far, I'd say more or less the same.

Our draft looked terrible. Not easy to overcome such a disaster.

Not until they have replaced Johnson, Pickett, and Reed.

The signing of Mallett and Jackson were the must do signings, the rest is gravy. All the negativity about the offseason is really annoying. On one hand people are upset we let players who arent worth their contracts go and then the same people are upset because we didn't go out and replace them with other bad contracts. Cmon people!

My post said nothing of expectations, it merely put in the context that you left out (purposefully or not).

Comparing Schaub and Fitz's situation to Mallet's is pure bunk.

Schaub played his way out of Houston, and Fitz was replaced.

Those two have zero in common with Mallet other than the fact they were traded for 3rd day picks.

If that's how you want to judge a player, without any further analysis, that's your prerogative, but people have a right to point out how flawed that is.
