Sylvester Magee, man I literally was just reading about him. "While it is impossible to verify Sylvester’s exact age, as no certificate of his birth for him can be found, court records in Covington County, Mississippi listed him, along with his father, on a bill of sale in 1859. He died in 1971."

Very interesting person and I actually believe he was 130 or damn close to it.

It will not, they're not going to start going to Howard, or leave for American University and (hypothetically) watch blacks take up slots at Georgetown. The value of a place like Georgetown: particularly as the most prestigious private college in a large city, comes through in internship and entry-level opportunities that far outweigh the hypothetical offense at paying a single fee, and actually (indirectiy and unintentionally) reaffirms heightened social status and economic and professional trajectory in comparison to blacks.

If you go too far left, you will lose your status as a serious institution.

Also, do blacks not benefit from attending the school too? What do you mean in comparison?

Only by your idiotic and imagined criteria, hiring managers and graduate schools are not turning away graduates from the oldest and most prestigious school in the nation's capital.

Blacks attend Georgetown but are not any predominant demographic, particularly in comparison to Washington as a whole.

Reparations are not about paying for the sins of your forefathers but rather acknowledging that much of this country was built on the backs of slaves, and today we still reap those benefits. Why should we gain and not take care of the descendants who suffered?

Where does this logic line stop? It doesn't. Let's extend it to all families who had soldiers who died in war and gave their life literally to forge this nation. All of them should be compensated for losing a provider in days when the men were the income source of the family. This surely put them lower on the socio-economic ladder. Their sacrifice should be paid for too I think. Let's do this for other groups too who had hard times, because this country was built by their suffering and sacrifice. To act like just slaves built this country is a lie. There were plenty of people who were grinded down and treated like damn near slaves. Let's go ahead and give them money too.

So who pays for reparations? White people? Isn't that... racist? Who pays? How much? How do you decide how much is needed and when can they stop paying? This is a ridiculous idea and is an endless exercise in idiocy.

He is a troll meant to take you in circles forever - you are debating with likely racist pretending to be a negative AA stereotype. Everything he or she posts is intended to make AA's look worse. Put him on ignore , otherwise you are part of this cruel joke.

Veterans do receive benefits as do their offspring and families. Also, a soldier has the option to fight - slaves did not, they had their lives taken from them and put their children into a cycle of poverty.

If the students want to help fix that since the university profited from slavery, than that is their right. And slaves did do much to build this country and help it become a superpower. I'm sorry you don't know your history.

So you admit that black Americans have been seriously damaged historically?

Slavery is a crime against humanity. Comparing slaves and free men who fought for their country is so childish and dumb. Grow up dude.

If Georgetown wants to pay reparations for their role in slavery then good for them.

All people, with the exception of 0.1% of the population, have been seriously damaged historically.

My ancestors were serfs once upon a time , with no rights. Life wasn’t fair for any of us.

In fact, that’s why white people moved to America centuries ago.

The pyramids of Egypt generate tons of revenue for the govt while being built by slaves. There is no nation that wasn’t built by unfair practices towards marginalized people.

What extra is each person entitled to? What is the point of even going there, it’s a defeatist mentality.

This is a university administration seeking to pay reparations to the descendents of slaves sold by that university. While I don't know the finer details of just what they will do with the money collected, such as how long this fee will be in effect, how much they hope to collect and how it will be spent, whether they know who the descendants are and can locate them, and so on, it's worth pointing out that they are a private institution. The students voted to approve this measure and if Georgetown wishes to move forward with it, I see no reason why they shouldn't. If a student there disagrees, or someone considering going to Georgetown disagrees, they are free to go elsewhere.

I'm interested in seeing how this plays out. While I don't, in general, favor reparations for something done back during what our young country would consider "ancient history," that this is aimed at correcting a wrong the university itself was responsible for makes a great deal of difference, in my opinion.

Soldiers were paid, many of them willingly volunteered to serve and were allowed to resign when their term was up. It's also a lot easier to trace the descendants of soldiers because, when they had kids, they weren't sold off to another ranch. Also no one celebrates Slavorial Day or Fourth of Slave.

That was a really weird post, man. Do you think before you write something like that? If not, you should.

So the Jesuits did this a couple of hundred years ago? Why doesn't the Vatican pony up some cash? They have a long history of paying people off to cover up misdeeds that are on par with slavery.
