Creating a thread to cover some of the GDC related things that either have happened or will happen this week. There have been some non-GDC related things (some PAX East stuff) that I might include too, but it was simpler to just attribute it all to GDC. The Game Developers Conference is this week. There has been some PR for games already, but the expo doesn't start until tomorrow (and the good talks don't start until then either). Sony seems to be using this time to push for more positive PR on the PS4 and their other platforms, so expect lots of stuff there. Random news bits and media: * I haven't really followed why/how, but apparently there will be a reveal trailer for Battlefield 4 tonight (~11PM PDT...so actually tomorrow if you go by Houston time I guess). Oh wait, looks like some screens have leaked (maybe fake, but seems legit to me): http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=530253 * Hideo Kojima has a talk at GDC tomorrow at 11AM PDT I believe. Will discuss MGS, their new engine/tech, etc. Presumably they'll finally explain what the hell is going on with The Phantom Pain as well. If you missed it: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/c_dtZm7KwT0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> * Sony has a PS4 talk tomorrow as well (think it is also @ 11AM PDT). Since the new Xbox hasn't been formally announced, MS likely won't directly do anything at this GDC, but maybe there will be some indirect talk about it. If nothing else, there likely be some discussion/demos from developers that will apply to both PS4 and the new Xbox (e.g., UE4...though I'm not sure what Epic has planned). * Speaking of PS4, there's this nice interview with Mark Cerny about the PS4. It was originally in Japanese I think, but NeoGAF has a translation of some key points: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=530181 Mostly highly technical things that most don't care about, but I thought it was really interesting stuff. The notes about CD playback make me think maybe they could do PS1/PS2 disc playback. * Some free to play games were announced for PS4 (Blacklight: Retribution and Primal Carnage: Genesis). Not sure I really care, but the latter game has dinosaurs...and the tech demo looked kind of nice (maybe because it has a big T-Rex though...sans feathers ) <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/EmE7gxoOJZ4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> I'm posting these only because we're still at the point that every confirmed PS4/next-gen game is kind of noteworthy (though I'm curious how free to play games will fair on consoles). * Indies in general have been singing praises about Sony, and there seems to be a lot of support for PSV, PS3, PS4, and even PS Mobile. A sample article: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/...proval_makes_moves_to_get_indies_onto_PS4.php Probably just part of a PR push by Sony to change their image (and get more support for PSV, along with the other platforms), though it does sound like they're doing things much better now than they used to. They also announced support for Unity on each of their platforms, which I thought was pretty nice (not ground-breaking, but nice to see). * I liked this game coming out of Sony Japan: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/SoLz4BPXsOw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> * New Watch Dogs video, though looks like a re-cut of the PS4 trailer (still nice IMO though): <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/b_Zd6OBwlPs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> * Lengthy look at Beyond (next game by "Heavy Rain" crew). Not really GDC related, but came out recently, and I'm really looking forward to the game: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/zkCOPgq17Wc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> That's some of the things that seemed to stand out to me, although I'm sure I missed some good things. Here's a NeoGAF thread about GDC: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=529212 Has info on specifics events, dates and time, etc. (On a side-note, Nvidia had a conference recently where they mentioned one of their upcoming GPUs should have 1TB/s of memory bandwidth...guess the PS4 does suck). edit: I forgot, Nintendo seems to really be improving their indie support too: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/...sier_requirements_for_3DS_Wii_U_indie_dev.php
I'll post links later, but Kojima's conference has been going on for a bit. The Phantom Pain is MGS5 (duh). They had a new trailer and a short gameplay demo. Going into technical things now. edit: Not sure if this will stay up: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/cEuJ2q3uBYI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Interesting trailer, lol. I've never gotten into MGS so I guess it's just the story line evading me? I also feel like they've gone a bit crazy with the specular, I don't know why people need to look like plastic action figures. Just cus you can do something graphically doesn't mean you should.
The storyline is crazy. Even if you played every game, that trailer will confuse you (and that's probably intentional). Note things like it seeming like there are just two characters in the ER early in the trailer, but there's probably 3 (camera POV is from a 3rd character). MGS talk can go here: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=230529
A few random updates: - Unity will be free to use for all Wii U developers. Nintendo also working on allowing devs to use HTML5 + JS for games. Some info related to that: - EA and Nintendo must not be friends right now. DICE says the Frostbite engine doesn't support Wii U right now, so no BF4 and presumably other games using the engine until that changes (if it ever does). FYI, EA is using this for 15+ games I believe, including Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc. - Random PS4 info (taken from NeoGAF): http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=530748 More controller + camera pics: http://www.engadget.com/gallery/playstation-4-dualshock-4-and-ps4-eye-gdc-2013/5771583/
is it sad that I haven't played MGS4 yet because I'm still waiting for the ps4 to go down in price? damn I'm cheap.
You mean PS3? Anywho, you might want to get on that, as far as I know PS4 isn't backwards compatible.
Yeah, PS4 won't play PS3 games, at least not natively. They may eventually offer a service where you can play MGS4 via streaming, but not something to count on (and certainly not anytime soon). TECH DEMOS! <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/l6R6N4Vy0nE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> (similar, but not the same as what Nvidia showed recently...Nvidia's technique ran on a Titan @ ~30FPS, this ran on a GTX 680 @ ~180FPS I think) <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ATU6IGCMpUA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/62zPjIXXSqw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/LqiBWaHegAo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pCmcUfGY2iM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> edit: I forgot, we got a teaser trailer for Double Fine's Adventure game (the Kickstarter one), which is now called Broken Age <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/BWM4R5JsakE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> (If you backed it, you might have already seen this since it was revealed to backers earlier than the "general public")
I haven't really checked it out, but Bungie had a talk about Destiny: http://www.gamespot.com/shows/gamespot-live/?event=bungies-brave-new-world-20130328 <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xKOY8zJx2Q4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Don't think they show a lot from the game (saving the good stuff for E3 and other reveals I imagine), but maybe some good stuff if you've been interested in the project. Valve apparently showed something good at GDC. Mark Cerny and Yu Suzuki were apparently talking strategy for Shemue III. Actually, probably just a silly tweet attached to a picture of the two...but what if it was true?
New Unreal Engine 4 demo: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kr2oHPSJ0m8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Looks really nice.
