we dont need him to handle the ball and initiate offense, but we do need a 3 pt shooter who is going to be able to cause problems for defenses if they close out too hard on his 3. he can dribble drive which cant be said for too many 3 pt specialist types
He's a player I'd invest a little more than the minumum on and for more than a year. He's young enough and his shot is deadly.
He's not the point guard is he? He's the 6th man shooter off the bench. Same situation as in San Antonio.
He likely has no interest in a "little more than the minumum" or he would have taken San Antonio's qualifying offer.
Why would it go to waste? Who on our second unit has the ball handling ability to generate consistent offense for them selves and others? This was a HUGE problem for us last year as when Lin and Harden sat down we were left dependent on Delfino and Beverly to generate offense which resulted in a lot of missed shots or turnovers. And don't say beverly, he is not a shot creator by any standard. He is a stud defensive player, but you need to augment him with a two guard that can get his own shot.
Sixth best 6. Gary Neal, SG, San Antonio Spurs (R) A month removed from playing a starring role at times in the NBA Finals, Neal is looking to cash in after playing three seasons in San Antonio for the minimum. By signing Marco Belinelli, the Spurs made it clear that they won't match an offer to the restricted free agent, who is the best long-range threat left on the market. Neal is more of a volume scorer than a specialist, and he's got some ability to play point guard, too.
We dont know why SA is withdrawing their QO, so it may not have been about what Neal wanted or money.
He's an extremely mediocre shot creator. We don't need a guy who can create 40% shots off the dribble. Stagger Harden and Lins minutes, hope Canaan and others develop. Not sure why people are so down on Bev either, his pick and roll handling is not bad, he didn't run many because he (correctly) deferred to Harden most of the time. Doesn't really matter because he's probably out of our price range anyway.
Marc Stein: All signals suggest that Gary Neal, after strong play in NBA Finals, sure to be snapped up quickly once he becomes unrestricted free agent Twitter @ESPNSteinLine Man, i hope the Rockets can get him. He doesn't make much money last year...like maybe $1mil. So if we offer him $2mil and for a team that contend...perhaps he will join. Look, I do not think our rosters is set or proven anything....a lot of NEW players coming and haven't proven anything. We lost Delfino and still looking for that guy to prove it and we don't know if Casspi is that guy or the new players. I am willing to bet Neal will fill that roll if we sign him.
As others said on the previous page, we're not giving up our mini-mid. Rockets seems set on keeping it to see what happens during the season. But Neal would be a good backup SG, if last season was just a down year shooting the three.

Spurs expected to withdraw qualifying offer to Gary Neal, making him unrestricted FA. thats not true...they may prefer that. but if you can land a player now with it that is seemingly better then anyone that will be available then you do it. neal is perfect for our team
I'm talking about our second unit on the floor. Not playing along side james or Jeremy. I think our second unit can absolutely use a guy that can create his own shot. And i disagree with your assessment with him being a "mediocre" shot creator. He is better than anyone we have coming off the bench, and he is a proven playoff contributor. Heck he torched Miami in game 6 along with Danny Green. Our team is in win now mode, we don't have time to wait or "hope" for reserve players to develop. Cannan was drafted as a future prospect and the players that we did sign i'm betting the FO is hoping one of them will be immediate help ala delfino from last year.
