I don't see anyone mentioning west side story starring natalie wood. 2009 wants to submit 'sin nombre' as a gangster film. i haven't seen elite squad so that will be a go tonight. =)
I agree with this almost 100%. Miller's Crossing is what you might call more literary. The writing is pitch perfect and the filming itself is gorgeous. I would rate them: 1. Godfather I 2. Goodfellas 3. Miller's Crossing tie with Godfather II. I know that's crazy but it's because I'm weird and I love the dialogue in Miller's Crossing. And the one scene without dialogue is my favorite gangster scene ever. <iframe frameborder="0" width="480" height="270" src="//www.dailymotion.com/embed/video/x3m5l8" allowfullscreen></iframe><br /><a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3m5l8_you-can-t-hit-albert-finney_shortfilms" target="_blank">You Can't Hit Albert Finney!</a> <i>by <a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/cliporama2" target="_blank">cliporama2</a></i>
if you are a fan of scarface should take a look at the 1932 version of scarface. Pretty interesting the amount that Oliver Stone lifted from the original. Right down to 'the world is yours' and
Mafia movies: Godfather I and II Goodfellas Once Upon a Time in America (slow movie but interesting theme) The Untouchables Hood movies Boyz n the Hood Do the Right Thing Menace II Society Colors Al Pacino Scarface Carlito's Way Heat International Snatch (UK) La Haine (French) The Prophet (French) Asphalt Playground (French) Gomorra (Italian)
^^ Props for mentioning the French movie "The Prophet." Highly recommended. Two others that IMO are imperfect but still very good are "Road to Perdition" and "Gangs of New York." All three films offer different but interesting takes on the gangster film genre.
A new one to add to the list: Bad Country It's about organized crime in Louisiana and it's in the Southern Goth category while definitely being a gangster flick. See it!! William Defoe, Matt Dillon, Tom Berenger… all great performances.
You don't want to miss this on the big screen today @3 at the alamo drafthouse here in Mason Park/Katy!!! <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>THE GODFATHER Double Feature <a href="http://t.co/WESHspVSlf">http://t.co/WESHspVSlf</a> via <a href="https://twitter.com/houstonalamo">@houstonalamo</a></p>— Nemuri Kyoshiro (@BaconSodaIsGood) <a href="https://twitter.com/BaconSodaIsGood/status/511179766649466880">September 14, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Three international films I haven't seen in this thread that I highly recommend: Mesrine (It's a two-part film - Mesrine: Killer Instinct & Mesrine: Public Enemy Number One) <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/f_Ku-B5Gkws" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Sexy Beast <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/osexRaPM_Gc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Eastern Promises <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/SPSqWOWgCRQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Since most of the pictures I would have listed have already been mentioned... its a bit of a stretch to fit the topic, but LA Confidential. Also a great movie to show off surround sound (the shootout scene towards the end... footsteps and then shots coming from all around).
