Brave Combo. I think that's how Jodi and Tamarie first became friends. They both must have gone to every show.
Yeah, sort of Frank Zappa meets James Brown. We used to follow them around Texas like the Grateful Dead. Probably went to 20-something shows back in the early 90's. Never missed them when they came to Houston. They're still around and play reunion shows all the time at Club Dada in dallas, although not with Earl Harvin (drummer) who was a big reason why I was so obsessed with them. Paul Slavens (singer) has a radio show on Sunday nights that I occasionally listen to online. Denton is a better music town than Austin ever was, frankly. All those amazing UNT players.
I have a friend who used to go to Numbers all the time in the late 80's and early 90's. I remember him telling me once that they referred to ecstasy as scooby snacks. I went to Numbers few times, but I was too much of an uptight suburban kid to get into the scene.
I never knew why Denton was such a music town, until my niece auditioned for UNT music school. I had no idea how highly ranked it is...like a jazz mecca. I just looked up Brave Combo's website. They play in Denton on this upcoming March 13th. Wonder if I could talk her into going, or if kids (even UNT music majors) wouldn't like them now.
My daughter goes off to UNT next fall. She plays French horn in the HS band now and may do marching band at UNT but isn't going to major in music. The UNT music program is exceptional. UT was too close to home and she fell in love with the vibe in Denton. I'll need to check the local scene when I go up that way and go see a live band or two.
There were a million different slang terms for it 'Scooby snacks' was definitely one, but in Houston the main term was just X. It had just been made illegal in the mid 80s - now after all this time as a schedule 1 drug its finally being allowed again therapeutically to treat PTSD.
Oh yeah. Batman, is Rudz still there? I always loved that building/bar, lived down the street from it in the early 90's, and I miss it. Someone earlier mentioned Sprawl House. It's crazy to think that waaaay back some of us were hanging out in the same couch/room/club/bar/???
Good. That is good. You never know what stuff will be torn down and repurposed. Mucky Duck still around?
I literally LIVED at Numbers from 82-87ish..... Had a great time at that place, also straight night at Riches.......what a great time that was. DD
