On November 24th, I saw him and this chick at the Galleria. He was in a wheelchair with a big cast on his foot (I think it was pink actually) and she was pushing him through to the elevators. She's pretty hot, would hit. Arian was wearing a Duck Tales t-shirt. He is definitely a different type dude.

Texans star Arian Foster opens up on podcast

Houston Texans running back Arian Foster opened up to Michael Rapaport on the actor/comedian/director's podcast "I Am Rapaport" about several topics, but he didn't address his future with the franchise.

Foster talked more about life in general, and revisited several topics - like being an atheist and briefly adopting a vegan diet. He did reveal that - although he watched the Super Bowl - he rarely watches football, because he sees the game differently now that he's been in the NFL for seven years.

"I watch zero football. I swear," the 29-year-0ld Foster. "Of course, I used to be a super fan growing up. Once you see the business side, you see it differently. I'm pondering entering the last couple, 3-4 years of my career and I'm thinking about what life will be like after football and I'm looking at the game differently. I look at it more like, 'I hope these guys come out healthy because they've got families.' It's not just entertainment to me any more. I see the men and the humans behind it. It's a vantage point that not a lot of people get to see. I still do enjoy the game. I love it, but it's just hard for me to watch it from a fan perspective."

Foster also addressed the dichotomy in the way fans view players and ownership.

"If an owner cuts a guy because of salary cap reasons or whatever, we're like, 'That's a good business move,' but if a guy wants a trade, and he's publicly demanding a trade or he publicly does something where he wants to go to another team, he's looked at as a bad person or a locker room rioter, he's not a team person and it's (bullcrap)," Foster said. "He's doing what is best for him and his family. It's a business move. People don't think about that. They don't look at you as a human anymore once you make a certain amount of money."

Foster revisited a conversation he had back in 2014, when he said if the league truly was concerned about player safety, it would do away with Thursday night games.

"If they really gave a (crap) about us, they would not have Thursday night games," Foster said. "It's the worst. you don't even practice (that week), all you do is have walkthroughs, because that's all you can do. Physically, you can't do anything else.

"I don't want it to sound like I'm complaining. I'm not complaining, I love what I do. I'm very ... I don't want to say privileged because that's disrespectful to the work I've put in and everybody else put in, but I'm just very grateful for the opportunity to play in the NFL."

Foster talked about becoming a vegan for six months in 2012. He gave up the diet midway through the 2012 season because he said he missed the taste of meat.

"I still get these questions, 'Are you vegan?' I'm like, 'That was four years ago,'" Foster said. "The media loves blood, so anything that's new, they'll attack it, so then you get all the baggage of that (vegan) stereotype. So, I tried it for six months, and four years later, I'm still asked questions if I'm a vegan."

Before the 2015 season, Foster caught some flack when he revealed that he is an atheist.

"I'm not one of those atheists who are picketing, that's not me," Foster said. "I just don't feel like it's very probable that there is a God. That's my opinion. There could be. I'm all for it, if there is ... My brother is a Muslim, I was raised a Muslim, my sister is a Christian. We're all over the spectrum. I'm just a super believer in we all have to occupy this same space and time, so we've got to get along. Whatever you believe, you believe. I'm not going to judge you for it."

As are most conversations with Rapaport, the entire 83-minute podcast is light-hearted. Foster talked about how some of his teammates changed their demeanor for the Hard Knocks cameras, but said coach Bill O'Brien kept it real for HBO and called his coach a "cool cat."

Foster's funniest story involved him being an undrafted rookie with the Texans and having just $5,000 to his name. When he splurged on a dinner at Applebee's, he immediately got a call from a family friend, who was serving as Foster's business manager at the time.

"I spent $37," Foster said. "He called me, 'Yo, what the (hell) is wrong with you, man.' I'm like, 'What do you mean?' He said, 'You just spent $37 on Applebee's. Who do you think you are?'"

Foster is entering the final year of a five-year, $43.5 million contract. He's scheduled to make a $6.5 million nonguaranteed base salary next season along with a $500,000 roster bonus to be paid at a $31,250 rate per game active.

Arian Foster: We Weren’t Aware Of Concussion Effects When I Got To NFL

Houston Texans running back Arian Foster has never been afraid to speak his mind. The seven-year NFL vet has spoken out on a variety of topics throughout his career and one of the main ones has been player health. He joined Michael Rapaport’s “I Am Rapaport” podcast on CBS Radio’s Play.it network on Friday to discuss a wide variety of topics, one of the first on tap was the concussion conversation surrounding the sport. Specifically, that players knew what they were getting into when they started playing the sport.

“That’s actually a big misconception that goes on,” said Foster. “In my generation of NFL football players, we get it a lot. Because we’ll say we’ll fight for player rights, fight for this or that, and the rebuttal is ‘oh well you knew what you were getting into’. We didn’t as far as the concussion stuff is, we didn’t. The science on it wasn’t concrete until about 5-6 years ago. Now, we know, but I was already knee-deep in it and I was already still trying to fix up my family so that’s what I was doing. The younger generation, growing up, they know what they’re getting into. We did not know what we were getting into. We knew as far as the physicality of the game and it was going to hurt our shoulders and our knees, but as far as brain injuries? We were not aware of how big a consequence it could be.”

With the greater awareness of the impact of head trauma and concussions on athlete’s later in life, we’ve begun to see players retire earlier in their careers. Foster said he thinks that will continue to be the case.

“Once you make a certain amount of money in the NFL–you have to remember why guys play NFL football. Most of these guys, I would say the majority, 60-70% of them come from low income housing, they come from the ghettos, and they’re just trying to make a way out,” said Foster. “Once you get a certain amount where your family is stable, what are you playing for? I can’t explain to the average NFL consumer how it feels waking up after a game where you get 30 carries. I’m limping to my bathroom.”

Pressed further on that topic, Foster gave a detailed memory he has of waking up after a game against Chicago back in 2012 in which he had 29 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown.

“It was 2012, I remember it vividly. We played Chicago at Chicago and it was raining,” said Foster. “They have one of the worst fields when it’s raining, the footing is terrible, so we couldn’t throw the ball. This is when we were a run-heavy offense when we went 12-4 and I got 29 carries. I remember waking up the next morning not being able to walk to the bathroom. My bathroom is 15 steps from my bed. It literally took me probably 3 minutes to get to my bathroom. I couldn’t move.”

Foster has been particularly outspoken about the league having Thursday night games as a part of the schedule.

“That’s another thing I said that I caught a lot of flak for. The NFL and the whole, they’re all about player safety, that’s all bull****,” said Foster. “If they really gave a s*** about us, they would not have Thursday night games.”

The one-on-one with Foster wasn’t all serious, the guys did have some fun. In the latter half of the podcast, Rapaport asked Foster what it’s like to be at the bottom of the pile when trying to recover a fumble and what the crazy thing that’s happened to him was. That led to this back-and-forth.

Foster: It gets weird, man. It gets weird. I’ve had a guy, uh, grab my nuts before.

Rapaport: And he might not have been…

Foster: No, he knew it was my nut.

Rapaport: He knew?

Foster: Yeah, he was looking at me. I will not name names either, but it was weird.

Rapaport: Did you have the fumble?

Foster: Nah, I was just down, when you’re down sometimes dudes just pile on you. Some guys take cheap shots, I’ve had guys try to twist my ankle, punch me in the ribs, choke me, poke me in the eye, anything goes man. Which is weird to me, I don’t understand it. I just feel like, man, who are you doing this for? Are you doing this for your owner? Like, why are you doing this to me? It’s not that serious. We’re all just out here trying to feed our families man. Yeah, I play for the Texans and you play for so and so, but I don’t want to hurt you like that. Some guys are just wired differently.

Then, Rapaport asked him who Foster hated to line up against. His response? The 2010 Ravens.

“I had that feeling one time in my career. It was 2010 when Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Haloti Ngata, when that defense, was like, that defense,” said Foster. “I had that one time. The prestige of Ray Lewis and Ed Reed and that was my first year as a starter.”

The last time Arian Foster played every game in a season was 2012.

From the outside it appears that was his last fully healthy season, but a running back having a fully healthy season is a bit of an oxymoron. During a podcast on the CBS Radio Network, Foster offered some insight into what he feels the day after a game. Even one he left "healthy."

"It was 2012, I remember it vividly. We played Chicago at Chicago and it was raining,” Foster said. “They have one of the worst fields when it’s raining, the footing is terrible, so we couldn’t throw the ball. This is when we were a run-heavy offense when we went 12-4 and I got 29 carries. I remember waking up the next morning not being able to walk to the bathroom. My bathroom is 15 steps from my bed. It literally took me probably 3 minutes to get to my bathroom. I couldn’t move.”

Foster had the seventh most carries of his career in that game. The six games in which he had at least 30 carries all came in his first two seasons as the Texans' starter. Since 2010, Foster averages the highest number of carries per game of any running back in the NFL.

When Bill O'Brien became the Texans head coach, he used Foster with gusto just like his predecessor Gary Kubiak did. Foster had 55 carries in his first two games playing for O'Brien, one of the highest two-game totals ever.

This is all part of the reason Foster is where he is now -- a 29-year-old running back who hasn't been able to stay healthy lately. He hasn't played a full season since 2012. He had two surgeries last season, one for a torn groin and one for a torn Achilles tendon.

His coaches used him as much as they did because he was so exceptionally talented while healthy. It's a compliment, but unfortunately for Foster, it's a philosophy that has almost certainly shortened his career.

That is pretty pathetic of Foster to claim. He was asking for those carries and got visibly angry when he didn't get them. He got more yards per touch as the game went on and always talked noise about he would be the one to buck the trend of RB's not playing past 30.

I don't see any complaints from Foster in that artcle. What you quoted is the reporter's comments.

The quote about having a hard time making it to the bathroom the day after the Bears game I guess could be construed as a complaint, but there's not enough context there, I took his full quote in the article as a statement of fact.

I remember that game so well. It was probably the highlight of the Texans as a franchise. Either that moment where Foster caught the touchdown while diving out of bounds right on the goal line, or JJ Watt's pick-6 against Cincy. It's a toss up for me.

I have always been a Foster supporter. Nothing that comes out of his mouth can undo poetry in motion. To me the top two RB's of a generation, if not top 3, should make the HOF. From 2005-2009 that was LT and Shaun Alexander, who I both think should make it. From 2010-2015 that was Adrian Peterson and Arian Foster. Imo Foster should be in if he retires today.

Sure, Jamaal Charles is a close third, but style points definitely count for me. Charles was a burner in the Chris Johnson mold, but nowhere near as graceful as Arian where if you saw him break loose with one defender left in front of him, you knew it was over. Arian shook Polamalu at the height of his career. Charles couldn't do that. He might have the YPC title, and just as many good years though, so it wouldn't kill me to see all three of them get in. I know Foster will be a borderline candidate, but my vote will firmly be on his side.
