Camille Ford hosts a show where she travels around the country to places that have multiple restaurants claiming to be "the best at" making whatever they're famous for in the same city. . A few days ago she went to Lockhart, Tx. to "settle" the BBQ wars there. I'm not sure which of the restaurants she went to as I didn't watch the episode. For all you BBQ lovers, and I know there're quite a few of you on here, that episode is going to be airing again tonight at 8:30pm (Central) on the Travel Channel.
That four horseman burger that's coming on right now is pretty crazy.... Chunky's here in San Antonio.. always busy.
I'm disappointed that Kreuz's won, but I'm not that surprised. The cooks at Kreuz's are very talented. One problem: their product since they moved is just not reliable any more. I think their new pits dry their meat out more than the old pits they had when they were in the old building. Get there early and it's probably good, but on a bad day it just isn't the same. That's why I go to Smitty's now. Sure, Kreuz's can barely inch out a win in a blind test where they hand-select the meat to serve the judges. But I know better, and I've been burned too many times, so I just don't trust their consistency any more. While I don't think Smitty's is as good as Kreuz's used to be, I do think they're more reliable and still serve some of the best Q in Texas.
We drove from Houston yesterday thanks to the Food Wars episode. Got to Smittys at 1:00 and a bus had just gotten there so the line was coming out the door. Went to Kreuz's instead and decided we would come back to Smittys after hitting up the outlets at San Marcos. Long line at Kreuz's too, but it moved quickly. Jalopeno and Cheese Sausage - Definitely the juiciest sausage I've ever had. Absolutely amazing. The regular sausage was really good as well. Pork Ribs - The meat just fell off the bone. Perfect combination of crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Probably the best thing here. They were out of beef ribs and I don't eat pork, so I only had a bite or so. Boneless Prime Rib - Great stuff. Brisket - Probably just a notch below Pork Ribs. The meat is a perfect combination of burnt on the outside and super tender and juicy on the inside. Went shopping and got back to Smittys around seven to find out it was closed!!!! Muther Fudger!!!! I was pissed. Went to Blacks instead. Sausage below average, Prime Rib average, turkey was good, chicken was not, pork ribs were not good, but the brisket was really really good.
It hard to make bbq in large quantities and have sit until someone buys it and have it taste really good. That is why my homemade bbq almost always taste better.
