All anyone does now days is what's popular and in, GRANTED that's pretty much always been the case. But now people just fo0llow whatever trend they are told is cool and that's in and often times hyped enough by the media.

I swear it's gotten so bad that if a celeb started wearing underwear on his/her head as a fashion statement and tried to swag it people would fall in line in do the same.

Why are people such followers? Pyschology majors/experts, help me out.

You're complaining that lots of people do what's popular? This is worse than your college thread.

I don't mind people doing what's popular. The problem is that what is popular recently is just stupid.

People have always done what's popular, that's not the argument. I'm saying now some weird trends are being followed, not exactly like people wearing afros, Jordans or highlights in their hair.

And I'm not saying there haven't been some unusual trends throughout history but more than it's becoming more common.

IDk how old you are but it has always been like this

    From Furbys

    to 80's Hair and 70's Disco pants/clothes

Now I side with you in saying the last of the COOL generational trends ended with the 90's flannel.. all the way up to the 2000's I really liked all the unique generational trends

    2000's + have sucked

Like I said, there have always been unusual and, bluntly, bad trends but now it's common place.

I think the Internet was a game changer lol. Especially since the mid-00s, with the rise of Google, YouTube, and widespread use of mobile devices and broadband internet, things are just so much more interconnected now. People have always been sheep. But now, the variety of new, popular people to follow means trends that are very unlike anything that was copied in the 20s through the 80s (i.e. Gangnam style). Before culture centers like Hollywood had a dominant impact on what was trendy. Now, it can be someone on the other side of the world with lots of followers on Twitter or YT subscribers.

Pick up any cultural anthropology and/or sociology book in the last 2 years to learn more about this new era we live in.

I think a better question would be, why do we have such stupid people determining (supposedly) what is popular?

Would we be a better world if bill gates set the trends? Theoretically. Interesting to think about.

I am guessing it has something to do with the internet. Information is so much easier to share and grab nowadays and your'e not required to have television or newspaper to get the most recent information.

    What? No, just no.

Not sure why people bellyache about what's popular. Do what you like and let others wear what they like. Even polo shirts. That's my motto.

    I disagree.

People are following many different mini-trends now rather than a few big ones like in the old days.

It's just more annoying because we see more people following more obnoxious trends.

From my perspective, this. We aren't seeing more "following trends" We're seeing, "I'm a ****ing special snowflake and doing things because I so cool and I'm not a part of the system."
