I'm going to New Orleans next weekend and plan on heading to one of the casinos down there. I only play Texas hold em so was wondering whats the process like to sit at a table.

I'm definitely no Phil Ivey but I did win a poker tournament (about 200 contestants) at my university last year. I will probably head to a smaller blind table at first just to get comfortable at first.

Is there a minimum buy in? What are the blinds like typically? Any suggestions on which casinos would be best for a first timer in Louisiana? What are some of the do's and don't that I should abide by while playing? Any other advice would be great!

I've learned that blackjack or paigow are good ways to get comped and spread your entertainment value. I normally try not to gamble much so I don't have much of a system.

I've only been to Harrahs in New Orleans. The minimum table is $1/2 I usually buy in for 200 but I think the minimum is 50. Get a Harrahs card so you get free parking. You should play late around 11 p.m. there's plenty of drunk people practically giving their money away. Good luck.

oh man, the first time i went to a real casino to play hold'em, i was freaking shaking. people could tell that i was new. but after a while i get used to it. win some and lose some. it's probably easier if you have friends sit at the same table. more fun to chat while playing.

Might be a little off topic but does anybody do online texas hold em? fulltilt, partypoker, etc..

I used to do partypoker a while back but they banned U.S. residents I think.. I'm getting a little bored and am thinking about getting back into it.

There are no more sites for US players due to that stupid new law/rule.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

seriously my advice is don't limit yourself to just one but try it all

Most tables are 1/2. Anything more and then you are talking seriosu money ($500+).

Three card poker is a good way to make a lot of money, or lose a lot of money real fast.

Obviously poker is not really a team game, but when playing any other card game (three card poker, blackjack, etc...) don't be afraid to ask the dealer what (s)he would do. They know the game as well as anybody, and they want you to win. The more winners, the more tips.

    Hope that helps.

Well it's always smart to buy in with at least 100x the BB if you are playing NL holdem. I'd recommend playing some limit tables first to get acclimated. Blinds typically range from 1/2, 1/3, 2/4, 2/5, 3/6, and 4/8. If you are going to New Orleans, obviously go to Harrah's.

As for advice on etiquette and stuff like that, you're going to have some major nerves, I guarantee it. Don't get cutesy with your chip betting (like splashing/throwing/etc). Casinos are huge on string bets, you will be called out/embarrassed/chastised if you try to string bet. Do not act out of turn. And do your best not to mess up mucking your cards. Just be courteous and respectful to the game, and you won't run into trouble. Remember, it's money out there and sometimes big money for people, the casino will be hard on you when you make a slip-up, don't take it personally.

Oh, and never slow roll someone. Never.

Also, tip your dealers on medium to big pots you win.
