Metallica in 7th grade. 97? What was 1,000 ****ing times more awesome was my second concert experience: Black Sabbath 1998 reunion tour with Ozzy. Oh, and also, don't forget the Deftones and Pantera opened for them. That was rowdy. Too bad I was 13.
That's pretty cool. Any connection with the Judy's is cool. I remember loving their live shows so much, and then the ones after Bruce from Record Rack started getting too involved (running around in a cow suit on stage) It kind of went over the top. It was still an awesome show, but didn't quite compare and got a little too gimmick heavy. But so many cool things at those shows from the playing the pots and pans, to breaking the light bulbs, to the instruments used on Zoo, to the Guyana Punch audience soaking. It was a good time. At that time it was only because of big brothers of me and my friends that we got to go to any concerts or shows, so I guess I owe some thanks.
Jackson's Victory Tour. 1984 or 85..can't remember which. took my older son to see Coldplay for his first concert this last summer.
calvin murphy was there? since we are anonymous here i dont mind saying my first concert experience was richard marx and wilson phillips at astroworld...my chuch youth group went to astroworld that day and some people who werent going to the concert ended up giving us their tickets. that was probably 88-89? first one i meant to go to was dee-lite and the happy mondays, also at astroworld. i think that was 90-91. i also saw morrisey at astroworld around the same time and i slam danced to 'every day is like sunday'...so hardcore! my first club show was spunk at some warehouse/artspace on the northeast side of downtown...summer 1991?
When I was in about 5th grade, my dad got a side job working security with a company that worked the Beaumont Civic Center. One of his jobs was workign security for Kenny Rogers. Part of his payment was free tickets to the concert. My first memory of a concert was getting to see Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton and how much the music sucked.
ah, the old Southern Star. Saw Night Ranger every time they came thru, but the weirdest time I ever saw them was when they were opening for Black Sabbath on the Born Again tour. Imagine that for a second......Night Ranger...then Black Sabbath w/Ian Gillian. Talk about two totally different fanbases. We (a bunch of disreputable looking hippies) were standing in front of a group of preppy-types who kept begging us to sit down(which we NEVER do at shows) so they could see. Them: Pardon me, could you guys sit down so my girlfriend can see? Us: Tell her to stand the hell up! lulz. My first show...hmm..thats tough. I think it was the Texxas Jam 82 with Journey, Santana, Sammy Hagar(the first of the over a dozen times I have seen Sammy) Joan Jett and Point Blank. The Texxas JAms were a fun times, where else couild you see so many bands for such a low price? The best one was the 83 Jam. Styx, Sammy Hagar, Triumph, Ted Nugent, Uriah Heep, and Bon Jovi The most memorable part for me mentioned in Wiki: (so I copypasta it to save me typing) Sammy came on right before Styx at the end. Trivia: Ted Nugent and Rik Emmett joined Sammy Hagar on stage in Dallas for their version of Led Zeppelin's "Rock "n Roll." (my note: also did so in Houston)Tommy Shaw recalls these shows as being some of the worst of his career. He claims to have feared for his life as his band was performing a play after some of the best hard rock bands of the day had performed. (This was the tour that essentially ended Styx.) this is true...by the time Styx came out, the place was half full cause everyone knew that they had not a chance of surpassing what had come before. I had to practically beg my friends not to leave yet, I wanted to see Styx.
04/26/1983 - Triumph Never Surrender Tour with Foghat @ Sam Houston Coliseum I was twelve years old and, boy, that was a rough crowd as far as concerts go. A lot of stealing concert shirts and fights breaking out. But, that was one of the best concerts I have been too after attending many, many concerts over the years. They had this spectacular lighting rig hanging over the stage that had like 5,000+ lights in it and they changed sequence with every note change. It was an insane lighting display and one I'll never forget because I've seen no other band do something quite as spectacular....and this was 1983. Foghat brought out the hot chicks to dance during some of their set. Funny you bring up Ozzy. I went to Ozzy not long after that first show and had a helluva time convincing my Mom it would be okay because she heard about this Ozzy fellow eating a bat's head and all that. "Oh Mom...".
We couldn't have been much older than 15 or 16 when we saw Rush at the Summit. I'll never forget the cutting edge laser light show.
seen both Triumph and Rush during that era, Triumph had the superior lighting. a very very underrated and mostly unknown band these days....a real shame Rik and Gil cant put the past behind them and reform like so many others of that era have done....Id love to introduce my daughter to them.
You must not be up on your Triumph news (or I must not be up on the latest). The stuff that happened the last few years started with Rik's brother being on his death bed in a hospital and asked Rik to make peace with the other band members. Rik did just that and the band started playing together again. They played some festival dates abroad and here. They were supposed to tour a year or two ago. However, something must have happened since then as I haven't heard what they are doing. I know the drummer was trying to build his chops back up. Do you know something I don't on the status of the band? Last I heard they made peace and were playing together again....albeit I'm sure Rik still has his solo thing going on. I'm wondering if they did, in fact, disintegrate again cause they had these plans for touring that didn't appear to pan out. The only thing about seeing video of some of the footage from those live dates is the band has definitely aged and it didn't feel the same to me as the glory days. Part of that is due to how long they were apart but the other is just them getting older. It just sounded a little different and less powerful imo.
I think my first concert was DC Talk at Astroworld. That sucks pretty bad as a first concert, but it still counts. I think the next one I saw was RUSH at the Pavilion. They played Side 1 of 2112. I've kind of been smoking dope ever since.
Yea...I remember some of that show. That is the show where woodchuck was climbing over the row seats on the floor. I think security caught up with him around the 7th row and gave him the boot from the floor. I'm not even sure how he got down there as our seats were lower prom on the side of the stage. lol I think that was Feb 26, 1990 at the Rush - Presto tour. Rush will be in Austin in June. They are coming back from their tour dates overseas. They will go from East to West to catch dates they didn't play last year on their Time Machine Tour. They are going New Orleans to Austin to El Paso and on westward. I saw that same show in late September...as did updawg, woodie, brownie, etc. in San Antonio. Not sure why you weren't there?
