Are you suggesting BOB was not involved in the decision? That Smith clandestinely stashed BOB's hand-picked project QB on IR and it didn't lead to BOB having an anger aneurysm? I find that hard to believe, especially when you consider BOB's legacy here may very well be creating a colossal clusterf**k of a situation with his QBs. Other than coaxing an unexpected decent season out of Ryan Fitzpatrick, nothing BOB has done with/for his QBs makes an ounce of sense.
They all need to be gone.... from the owner to that ******* parking attendant. The most likely scenario is that McNair's adopted son Rick Smith is promoted, with a pay raise and continues to have great influence. The Texans end up with a second tier GM next year because all the promising candidates know Smith will continue to exercise say and don't want to be stuck in the middle of it all. BOB is fired because Smith and he don't get along, we get some safe retread coach that cannot get work elsewhere and will take a shot being undermined. McNair makes a big deal about Cal McNair having greater control over the team to appease the fans. The fans still support the Texans..... Watt's prime is wasted like AJ and AF...... and the whole cycle repeats until McNair dies and Cal sells the team or the Texans luck into a great couple drafts or they luck into a great coach.
It's Albert Breer - he talked about it yesterday on 610. He believes he's one of only three coaches to have this power.
Well crap. That sucks. Would have been nice knowing BOB wasn't a total boob as well. Makes you wonder how Smith was able to "veto" him.
I think that veto was spin. BOB probably wanted to cut Mallet but after meeting Smith they jointly decided not to. Kind of how on Hard Knocks Smith initially wanted to keep Kourtney Brown but after talking to BOB they decided to cut him
The roster has his fingerprints all over it. He tried to recreate the Pats by getting a big nose tackle, a big TE, small quick WRs, guys who are supposedly versatile, etc. But most of the guys suck and he overpaid in terms of draft picks or salary. Nix, Strong, Wilfork, CJ come to mind
Yeah; I think the best course of action might very well be to burn the whole thing down. Different sports, and all - but the Astros and Rockets, I think, have shown the way: find a highly competent, progressive GM, let him hire a coach who syncs with the GM's Harvard-educated brainwave and go forth... I truly think what he *really* did was talk the highly emotional BOB out of making a truly bad decision. And my guess is that a BOB confidant saw it and leaked the info; that Smith was "vetoing" BOB to try and speed up this divorce.
NBC Sports says Smith determines the pool of players available to O'Brien... which is kinda screwed up.
This is the impression I was under, and it makes sense. Clearly BOB has input on who he wants, but those final acquisition decisions come down to Smith.
It's like the shell game... nobody can figure out who is responsible for this ineptitude. you know, when I was younger, I could follow the Goya can of beans and pick the winner often, but now that I'm old, I'm left guessing whether it is "1, 2, or 3". I now hit ever so often, which is significantly better than our FO. Such a nightmare. Do we keep playing the violin, or do we start to swim...this water is really cold.
Smith has had almost 10 years in GM role. He had his time and did not produce so he must be fired. BOB has only had 1.5 years. 1 good year and so far 1 trending bad year. He needs to finish the season and get one more draft with a different GM. He needs at minimum another 1.5 years to prove what he can do.
I hate this way of building. It's the reason we're where we are now. You have to just burn the whole thing down. I don't care if it's only BOB's second year. He's shown more than enough ineptitude and self righteousness to get himself fired. New GM and new coach. We're in this mess because they fired Casserly and replaced him with Kube's guy Smith and now you want to fire Smith and replace him with BOB's guy? Yeah that's a road we need to go down again /s
Interested in Hey Now and Mr. Clutch's take on this description of the 'final say' mechanics of the Texans FO. If Smith is truly the 'final word' on personnel, roster availability (IR etc), free agency, the draft, and trades, then this looks really bad for him. Granted, what BOB has done so far with this roster this year has been total lollerskates, but it's undeniable that our FA/draft ineptitude has been the biggest problem facing this team for some time.
That's like saying Schaub was signed so they could get the draft pick that turned into Alfred Blue. Morey is very good, like Mr. Clutch has said, at leaving himself an escape hatch in case the player doesn't work out. He thought Kostas was going to work out as a Rocket. He thought Nick Johnson was going to work out as a Rocket. Same as Dorsey. He did NOT sign them saying "you know, I'm signing this contract because I know in a year I'm going to trade them for Ty Lawson". Smith was ranked #15 here http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...anagers-by-2015-offseason-performance/page/19 (higher than Belichik and Schneider) #12 here http://www.sportingnews.com/list/46...wsome-bill-belichick-jerry-jones/slide/347732 #13 here http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfls-best-gms-2015-184000157--nfl.html Those were the first few results from a google search. We, the fans, think Smith is horrible. Fair as his bad moves are horrible but he's not as bad as we make him to be.
I don't understand that article at all. BOB has final say but Rick can sit on his ass and not sign guys BOB wants?
