Think of these as game notes. I'll hash out something after I iron out my basic feelings about the films.

The sundance film festival runs until this upcoming weekend (w/ some of the award winners at the beginning of next week). I don't think that I'll see another film for a few months after the festival (you'll understand why reading tues. notes).

    Friday January 19, 2001.

    8:30 a.m.--
    1) Bleep Brothers (Japan).

Some of my friends complain about the boring slew of curse words in South Park. South Park is Hamlet compared to the Bleep Brothers. What was up w/ the sappy American music during a Japanese film?

    Some time at night(time?)
    2) Series 7.

Good film. Makes fun of sensationalistic t.v. The director thought he had something a bit different than he actually had though, but that's b/c he came up w/ the idea back in '95, and there have been plenty of things said about reality t.v. since then. Still pretty funny. Directors and actresses were there for q&a.

    Saturday January 20, 2001.

    time?
    3) The Dish (Australia).

Aussie film to make Americans feel great about themselves and Apollo 11. Yee hoo, we did it. All in all, fine as a feel good film, but w/ the transparent filter over the bus & then seeing wb, you wonder if this was really supposed to be at the festival. Sam from Jurassic Park and Patrick Warburton (Putty on Seinfeld, also did The Woman Chaser last year) were there for q&a also.

    Sunday, January 21, 2001.

    time?
    4.) Maelstrom (Canada).

Best film I've seen at the festival in 2 years. Makes me want to study Canadian film, in particular this director (name?). Beautiful imagery. You don't realize until the end of the film, though, that there was hardly any dialog. Incredible. Director for q&a.

    Monday, January 22, 2001.

    6:30 p.m.
    5) Double Whammy.

With a cast of Dennis Leary, Elizabeth Hurley and Steve Buscemi I knew that this film was going to make it across the US. I still wanted to try to see Elizabeth H. in person, though, so I gave it a shot. No luck. The film is a trite bad cop does good, saves the situation, his career and gets the girl. The only good thing about the film is that you see Liz naked. [IMG]

    Tuesday, January 23, 2001.

I got up early to try to get some films under my belt. I headed down to the Sundance ticket office and got a bit too many films. They were all great, but damn...

    12:00 p.m.
    6) The Endurance.

Good documentary based on the explorer Shackleton that tried to cross Antartica in 1914. A day's sail from the continent, his boat got stuck in the ice. He and his men were lost for 635 days, but all 28 survived. Good movie, unless you're some business major that expected to learn alot more about Shackleton and his mgmt. practices (like a friend of mine). Director for q&a.

    3:30 p.m.
    7) Compassionate Sex (Spain).

Like seeing one of Almadovar's early films. This director has alot of potential. Had to bolt before q&a to meet a friend after the movie.

    6:00 p.m.
    8) Together (Sweden)

Funny movie about a Swedish 70s commune. Hilarious outtakes on sexuality, politics and family. Director for q&a.

    9:00 p.m.
    9) 101 Reykjavik (Iceland).

Funny movie about an irresponsible 30 year old that still lives w/ his mom. It's fun to watch his maturity as he comes to grip w/ life after a few failed attempts at suicide. Acting director for q&a.

    Wednesday, January 24, 2001.

    9:30 p.m.

    10) Jack The Dog.

I've never walked out on a film, much less in front of the director and cast THAT WERE SITTING IN OUR SAME ROW. But sheez, this was the most boring bs film I've seen in my life.

Well that's it for now. As I remember more, I'll come back and edit it. We have a few more films, and I think I get to see Peralta and Tony Hawk tonight at Dogtown & Z Boys (a documentary).

    Achebe,

The buzz here in New York is that film by those kids in Florida about the prositute that was raped at that frat party (at Florida State?)

    Have you heard about it?

    mc mark,

I was going to try to see that film, but it only played the 21-23 and I had other things going on. It would have been cool to see it instead of Double Whammy on Mon., but I feel totally lucky to have seen Maelstrom (sun) and Endurance (tue), when it was also playing.
