I assume with Hurricane Ike that there are a lot of people out there that are buying a new fence. I got a quote for $15/ft with everything installed and old fence removed. Is this normal / reasonable? I normally would save the $$$ and build it myself, but I am moving in two weeks so I don't really have the time. It seemed to be as good of a deal as I could find, but my neighbor is balking at splitting that cost with me.
Built my own... 'memmer the ONE-Question Thread with the bad neighbor? Saved some money... I got some peeps who helped me out, but it's ready now. I spent about $700 for about 85 feet, but some posts were still intact. Your quote sounds about right... but ask what kind of lumber they're using... it could be untreated, and it will not last...
Why don't you tell your neighbor to go get some estimates himself. My neighbor and I built our fence for the cost of ~$10/ ft and we had all the tools. I had a contractor bid the job and he asked for $22/ ft. My insurance gave allowance of ~$20/ ft.
I will have my insurance call my neighbors' insurance to get the other half I wasn't paid by my insurance. This guy is stalling to give me the other half of what I am owed. Ask you adjuster or insurance agent to help you out in this matter. My adjuster said the neighbor (that's not a term I want to apply to him, anyway, since he doesn't want to pay) should pay my other half, since I built it all without him helping.
I always thought of fence-building as a solitary act, not one done in conjunction with a neighbor. That is, if you want a fence, you pay for it, you build it on your property, you decide if you want to take it down, you collect the insurance money if it is damaged. If your neighbor doesn't like it, he can go build his own fence so he doesn't have to look at yours.
Both my neighbor and I built are back fence together.....$750 in Lumber, $70 Nail gun rental. We got a quote from a guy at $12 a foot but decided to do it ourselves.
This sounds pretty reasonable to me. Especially if the old fence is completely removed (as opposed to just put in your driveway for the garbage men).
I think we paid $16 a foot - which we then split with our neighbor. Give him a week to get a better quote - but remember that quality counts too. Our fence is about 7 foot cedar with a rotboard at the bottom.
My uncle does 2 rail fences for $17/foot. He's real good and that's a good deal. At that or under is a good deal.
Wow that's a good deal! I'm in Pearland and I can't get anything lower than $20/linear foot. Would you mind sharing your fence builder's contact information? I'm assuming you're happy with his work and would recommend him to others?
