The NBA had a real asset in Yao. Too bad they treated him so miserably on the court (read terrible officiating). I've said it many times before ... go back to China, Yao ... at least you get respect there. Now it may be payback time.

I agree, the referee's seemed to have it in against Yao...

But now he's retiring and the Rockets can move on... And so can the Yao Ming fans.

    Go Rockets!!!!

I think he's already brought enough fans to the NBA, that has impacted it tremendously.

    Two thoughts:

A.) The lockout is going to hurt the NBA tremendously overseas.

B.) Had things gone differently (ie: Yao had led us to multiple championships over a 15-year career), I think the Rockets become a global brand like the Lakers, Celtics, and (if you consider them) the Knicks.

Tbh Yao was terribly officiated. Not that it was intentional, just the refs have never had to deal with someone that huge before.

Exactly. They didn't want Wilt 2.0 to happen. So they didn't give him any calls.

the same reason shaq was terribly officiated. its just hard to call the same foul on a 6'5" guy pushing another 6'5" guy than on a 6'5" guy pushing a 7'+ 300 pound+ guy. its a matter of perception.

Hakeem got fouled every time he got the ball. He was quadruple teamed back in the day.

JVG told us that the refs' bias was indeed intentional. That's all we need to know.

Exactly. And Dwight Howard and Shaq need to go back to Africa, where they are respected by the referees.

China had enough NBA fans way before Yao.

Michael Jordan was the one who brought NBA the Chinese fans.

How did you get one green rep bar posting crap like this? Guess where he made a million-billion dollars and became a world wide marketing sensation?

I think he is referring to the NBA officiating, which most of us probably and somewhat agree with. JVG also said so.

You've obviously not been to China in recent years.

I'll guarantee you ratings won't as high next season. Combination of Lockout + losing Yao Ming. Stern is probably crying in his office right now.
For the NBA lockout is is unfortunate, but good timing. Puts more pressure on Stern and owners.

Michael, at most, was instrumental in opening the doors but it was Yao that brought the masses of people through to the sport

So you are saying that people in China would only watch NBA games if Yao is playing? Kobe would disagree with that statement.

Yao had it much worse than Shaq or Dwight Howard.

Shaq got a lot of leeway along with his defenders. The refs rarely call his offensive fouls at the same time they allow his defenders to drape over him.

Dwight Howard isn't a post player, and doesn't get affected by refs the way Yao does.

Refs never gave Yao any leeway on offense because he doesn't look "aggressive" like Shaq. But at the same time they give his defenders leeway for beating him up because they're a lot shorter than Yao.

Shaq gets bad calls on one end, but he gets favorate calls on the other. Nobody was allowed to lower his shoulder more than Shaq.

In Yao's case, he gets burned by refs on both ends of the floor.I can't remember another major player got treated as bad as Yao by refs under normal circumstance. Dennis Rodman maybe treated worse in a few games when he was fighting with Stern, but that's not the entire career.
