And keep in mind the era in which McHale played. They didn't have many of the advanced medical diagnostic tools used today. Sports medicine has come a long way, but the "rub some dirt on it and keep playing" mentality has stuck around.
maybe im in the minority, but i dont think the Rockets take this risk if they aren't satisfied with the medical report. We have an extremely smart front office. They know our championship window is just opening. I doubt they risk that on this playoff run. Will Bev be 100%? No way. But I think theres a good chance his knee doesnt get worse.
If Beverley were at risk for hurting his career he would be sitting out. His agent would not let him play.
I agree with everyone who says Beverley should put himself over the team at this point. Also, when do you as a coach / GM step in and protect a player from himself and say "we're going to shut you down"? I believe McHale should've protected Bev by not playing him after that injury for sure. For the rest, I'm not sure. You cannot forbid a guy from playing but me thinks the doctors agree he should play because of the playoffs but that's just me..
Beverley will probably get injured again before the playoffs are over. Sucks because that puts the Rockets in a tough spot because otherwise you would need to rely on Canaan or Troy o) or Lin to defend Lillard well.
One would hope so, but ultimately agents don't make that decision. The player and coaches do. And a lot of the time the coaches only have the player's opinion of whether they're "ready to go" as a reference point. Not so much in this case (MRI), but in less obvious injuries it definitely happens. Anyway, all we can do is hope that Beverley comes out of all this healthy and whole and doesn't take any excessive risks.
people make to much of this defend lillard stuff, its 32 teams in the NBA that have to deal with lillard. We have 2 of best rim protectors in the NBA. This dude is not jordan or kobe from the midrange. The issue more than anything is the backup playmaker. Brooks could fill that role if he was still here. Lin has had to get out there and defend jackson, parker, lillard, curry "last year" and we came out with wins I dont know u if you people notice but the team in general seems to be more effective when lin is on the floor for some reason. 2 playmakers and fast break points just seem to work good. And the lin and bev combo is always great also.
Patman knows that he is an asset and can easily be a throw-in on a trade for rondo or some other player the rox really value. Thus, if the docs clear you -YOU PLAY AND YOU PLAY HARD. You never know if you will be a Denver Nugget next year or a NY Knick playing for nothing more than to upset playoff team seeding.
So Bev goes to see one of the best knee surgeons in the country, who says he doesn't need surgery, and clears him to play. Then, an amateurish sports writer, who doesn't know crap about knees, writes an uninformed article disagreeing with him, and the majority of people side with the writer. Hard to believe.
No doctor today would allow a player to play through a broken foot the way McHale did. That's old school medicine. You can say what you want about Beverley playing hobbled, but be sure that there remains a standard of care regarding what doctors will and will not allow their players to play with. If Beverley were truly risking his career and future health to continue on, then I would have confidence in the Rockets training staff, if for nothing more than their standards as professionals, to tell Beverley and the team that he would be held out under no uncertain terms. But apparently that is not the case. Now all we are left with is speculation. Time to just take what we can get and be happy with it as fans.
Remember HOU PG situation? Brook>Lowry>Dragic>Lin>Beverley> ???? Morey must have many potential PG in his pocket.
We need Tony Stark to build Beverly a knee brace with an arc reactor that powers an electromagnet that keeps the shrapnel from piercing his meniscus and killing him.
In concept, the article is fine, but EVERYTHING is completely speculative. The article doesn't shed any light on his ACTUAL medical condition and diagnosis. Was Beverly taking any risk coming back from the meniscus tear? No facts. Does the new injury have anything to do with the old one? No facts. Does playing with the new or old injury cause any reason for long-term concern? No facts. Beverly and the Rockets both have a large stake in his long-term health, so I don't think they're going to sacrifice him in a playoff run that will likely end up without a championship.
From Beverley's perspective, if there is any doubt whatsoever, then he should rest. He needs to secure a big contract for himself before potentially messing up his knee. From Morey's perspective, if the doctors clear Beverley, and he wants to play, then Morey should let him play. Cannot throw away a 1 in 20 shot at a championship. Beverley is not under contract to the Rockets beyond next year, so it's wrong to say that an icewater-in-veins GM would definitely re-sign him to market price. Would Morey re-sign Bevereley if the bidding goes up to $7 million a year?
