Proponents of draft reform would say the system is unfair now. Are we to delay needed reform until its convenient for everyone?

When you speak of shock, I consider that a matter of logistics as well. If manufacturers could easily change their production lines to meet higher standards, we would have them do so immediately. I think my healthcare reform example is similar to yours in scale. In both cases, shock is guaranteed, industry-wide, and would be felt all the way down to the consumer level.

NBA draft reform is on a different level. It would affect only non-playoff teams and the "shock" would only be felt by teams that are intentionally tanking (Philly). And the shock Philly is supposed to feel isn't even guaranteed as they might surprise and make the playoffs. I've compared draft reform to the closing of tax loopholes, it should be done quickly. Who cares what Philly's plans were? They aren't supposed to be intentionally tanking anyway.

Luck was a huge factor in Morey's rebuilt. If thing went according to his plan and Stern didn't veto the Chris Paul trade, our 2 best players will be Pau Gasol + NeNe instead of Harden + Howard.

Morey did trade away Battier for Thabeet when we had a good chance making the playoffs (but no chance winning the championship). The supposed reason was that Morey didn't want to pay a high price resigning Battier after his contract is up.

    This

What Philly's been doing has crossed some line for me. It's not good for the NBA, and by protesting this change in the lottery system, they are just underlining their intentions, and probably making the League more determined to implement the changes ASAP. :)

Love you Sam Hinkie, but this. Makes sense.

In soccer, losing teams have a playoff to avoid relegation.

A similar "losers" playoff bracket for draft position could be done.
It would be unfair to just straight out give the winner of the losers' playoffs the #1 pick (we would have had 3 #1 picks in a row in the last few decades haha). But they can make the playoff results determine the lottery balls. The main issue of this is that truly bad teams will stay truly bad, but that's their fault.

Nice spin by Moriarty, since Battier was clearly declining.

By high price, he must've meant he didn't want to embarrass Bats with a lowball offer and sold high

You can count on the Pacers pushing hard for this rule change. They're going to suck next season, but not enough to have a decent chance at a top three pick.

I think they do. Their offense is now David West.

Paying Battier had absolutely nothing to do with trading him. Houston was trying to acquire assets to trade for Dwight Howard; along with Hasheem Thabeet, they also got a 1st round draft pick from Memphis. The 1st round pick was seen as a better trade asset for a rebuilding team than grandpa Battier. They also received a 1st round draft pick that same day from Phoenix in the Aaron Brooks for Goran Dragic trade.

These two 1st round picks were together traded for a pick that turned into:
