    Kind of weird that coaches can own part of the team, but players cannot...

    He's not going to be a controlling stakeholder so no, I don't think this is a conflict of interest. Pro teams generally have many minority stakeholders that have no say in the management of the team - it's strictly a financial investment for them.

    That was the first thing I thought of. Sure, the percentage Kidd is buying is tiny, but still, wouldn't that make firing him awkward?

    I guess it's like getting stock options on your company when you get brought on. Technically you're investing in the company that invested in you. Sports world.
