As has been conjectured for months, the Phoenix Suns and Eric Bledsoe were unable to come to terms on a contract extension, per Paul Coro of azcentral.com.

There was no word of the details of the talks, but speculation is that Bledsoe's camp wanted starter money while the Suns would have been basing their offer on a combination of predictions and expectations rather than past performance.

Bledsoe, who scored 22 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists in the opener for the Suns, would have made almost twice Dragic's salary next season if the Suns would have paid Bledsoe money similar to Ty Lawson or Stephen Curry for example.

Bledsoe now will be a restricted free agent next summer, free to receive offers from any other team with the cap room to sign him. The Suns will have the right to match the offer though, and no restricted free agent has been signed away from his team against their wishes to date.

good for bledsoe, instead of a 4 year $36M deal he can now avg 16/6/5/2 and go get a 5 year $70M deal

Eric Bledsoe is an average player who will put up big stats in Phoenix this year. He proved that he is not a point guard when CP3 was injured last year.

You don't want to lock up average players when you might get a better player at the same position in the draft next year.

Someone is going to offer the max and the Suns will be forced to match.

They were. I am wondering if he meant "Suns" or if he completely had a stat error.

They weren't first round picks so Morey was able to "Gilbert Arenas" them with a poison pill.

trade him for picks? He could easily be a russell westbrook type with more PT he showed it in game 1. He's not even 25, he'd be worth a top 5 pick

He's not that great. He could maybe someday be the 4th best player on a contending team. If you're the Suns, he's not worth it if it limits your cap flexibility for the next 4 years. If someone pays him over $10 mil/per, they are fools.

...and wasn't Joe Johnson a RFA with the Suns before signing with the Hawks?

And they would be idiots to match a max for a midget shooting guard.

"...against their wishes" Yeah, looking like a complete stat error.

But they were still RFAs as DD said. Dave King's article looked to be pretty good until that last sentence.

Bledsoe's really good, but I don't think he's top 5 sg or pg. Plus he's only 6-1. He's a supporting player, not a building block. Not worth the max imo.

A bit strange that Bledsoe gets so much love and bloated value, whereas Beverley is just a bargain guy with heart. Not too strange I suppose, considering Beverley's struggle to even play in the NBA. But a bit strange.

What had Bledsoe done to deserve the max?

The Suns need to hold on to Bledsoe, he is a player they can build on for the future. Dragic is solid, but Bledsoe is a better choice. The Suns seem to be mounting up picks in hopes of landing Wiggins in the next draft.

A cheaper option, like Shumpert seems like the better choice to me.

meh, I generally feel teams should let players explore RFA more than they currently do. History has shown that RFA is severely tilted towards teams. It's why Morey has the policy of not giving extensions(future superstars that you want to lock up for an extra year notwithstanding of course).
