To be honest, two of the words I immediately associate with Communist China are Empire and State, so I guess it's appropriate.

Can you see it? What part of Houston are you in?

I'm near downtown, but I can't see it.

    WTF? No it's not.

You can semi-argue the date Sept 21, because that's when the first congress was held. And that Oct 1st is just the date they set as the date of celebration for the country's founding. Regardless, it's not October 10th.

60 years is far from the oldest country. Today we aren't celebrating the founding of China but the PRC.

True and no matter what you think about the CCP there is no doubt they have done a lot build the PRC into a country that is on the cusp of becoming a superpower.

Considering how interdependent our economies are making those Wester b****es sadder is very likley to have negative consequences on the PRC too.

From what I've seen most are ambivalent about it and many ABC's like me might not even be aware of it. Some American Chinese who are from Taiwan are not happy at all about this anniversary since it marks the triumph of the CCP and exile of the KMT.

I think it depends on which Chinese you are talking to. Many Chinese of my generation whose parents came here in the 50s and 60's are Nationalists who most definately aren't celebrating. Chinese who have come here later from the PRC probably are. From what I've noticed many Chinese organizations who have membership from both downplay both 10/1 and 10/10 so as to not offend Chinese from either Taiwan or PRC.

I'm celebrating the birth of the only Chinese republic there actually is. It's allowed.

Glorious! I saw the headline that they had raised the flag in the lawn of the white house and some patriots had a problem with that.

My family don't celebrate it but they are interested in watching the video.

OCT 10 is the Republic of China national holiday.

I can understand the Qing getting a bad rap... but no love for the Song? What about Gunpowder? Paper Money? The Navy? If it had lasted much longer, I bet they would have come up with electricity and guitar amps and stuff too. :)
