We are witnessing a fight between freedom and Islamism in Egypt.

I hope that good will prevail.

can somebody give me the cliffs here? Who would the military put in place if they oust Morsi? Somebody even more Islamic-fanatical?

Time to go long burqua and hejab manufacturing stocks?

The military's quite secular, and quite corrupt---

someone who won't rock the boat and who will maintain the military's privileges is my best guess

I don't think they're stupid enough to put a military figure in charge, but I haven't ruled out that possibility.

in any case, less islam for those who are tracking that sort of stuff, since they want power-sharing with the secular, liberal left opposition, which brings a bit of shine to my heart (though the fact that the military is still basically calling the shots doesn't).

The answer is: anyone who will agree not to disrupt the money being paid into the pockets of the military by the US government.

The problem is: that person will suffer the same fate as Mubarak and hopefully Morsi, since the problem is the allegiance of the President to the Egyptian people rather than his/her allegiance to neo-liberal or Islamist or whatever ideology.

Think of it this way: if the Russian government was paying your military a large sum annually, and the head of your military was de-facto vetting your presidential candidates, then it doesn't matter if Glenn Greenwald or Sarah Palin wins the election because you are not really getting someone who is fully committed to American citizens.

Yes, it is just as pathetic as the anti-Egypt policies that are included in US foreign policy.

So, regardless of whether the Egyptian military steps in on Morsi's side or ousts him out, it's still an evil puppet of the US?

It seems like the Egyptians don't want the Muslim brotherhood. It would nice if a secular president could win.

Of course. As long as it's a corrupt military that is making key decisions. Say they oust Morsi, and then new elections are called where 100 candidates register, and then a military council shaves that list to 10 people without having to give a reason... forget for a second what you believe and what I believe.. are Egyptians selecting their President or are Egyptians selecting the least corrupt candidate of the military's favorite list which is highly correlated with US foreign policy interests?

Americans wouldn't accept that for their country, and neither should Egyptians.

Army issued 48-hour ultimatum to Morsi to get his act together.

I am glad you are once again showing your true colors and showing your hate and disdain for the USA openly, so people on this American website know what to think of you.

Nope, but according to those who think "infidels" will rot in hell and should die and who appoint terrorist murderers as governors. They must go. Anything is better than that.
