I've heard (from a friend of a friend who works at Reliant, so you know.....grain of salt and all that) that the Texans and Reed are about 1/3 of a million off per year in what they are offering and what he wants. It is the Texans final offer, and Reed informed them that he is going to shop that number around. He might very well be happy with the number, but he wants to make sure it's the best he can get out in the market.
Aaron Wilson @RavensInsider Could Ed Reed return to Ravens? Never rule it out, but tight cap makes it real tough to do. Source says return would be bit of a long shot
True but I would prefer us to get him for these next couple years while we draft a safety in this year or next years draft. His veteran leadership can help a rookie safety IMO Plus Andre isn't getting any younger and his buddy could definitely help us out.
this is where im at with it. a 2 year deal coincides with the schaub/andre window and it allows us to have a stop gap safety without commiting multiple years..
Albert Breer @AlbertBreer On Ed Reed, his plan is to be patient with this, as much as he can be ... No plans to visit anyone else at this point, but that could change.
If all they were willing to offer was around what Quin got, then why not just sign Quin? Seems they could have tried to work something out there, then move on to Reed if a deal didn't get done. It's not like that position was in serious need of an upgrade anyways.
People like you are the same ones who would be blasting Rick Smith for paying Ed Reed $12 Million/Year. You say this makes you appreciate Daryl Morey? Daryl Morey is great, no doubt about it. But in order to be a good GM you have to know when "To Hold Em' and When to Fold Em'". In one year we have an entirely different team than we had last year, and are in a good cap situation, why do you think that is? Because we overpaid for Scola, or Kevin Martin? No it's because Daryl Morey knows the value of players and isn't willing to go over that number. The Texans would LOVE for Ed Reed to play here next season, BUT only if the money is right. So if we break the bank for Ed Reed but don't bring in any receivers, linebackers, or Offensive Linemen would he be competent then????? I didn't think so....
Because this is about making sure that in a couple of seasons when the cap explodes they aren't hamstrung by over-valued contracts from guys like Glover Quin. IMO The Texans look to be doing exactly what the Rockets have done for the last year in preparation for this off-season. They want to get as much bang for their buck with the players that they have (aka rookie contracts) and in 2 seasons when the cap explodes they've given themselves options to get out from contracts such as Matt Schaub's, Andre's, and even Arian Foster's if need be. So they want to make sure that whatever they do for the next 2 seasons doesn't prevent that. It's all about cap flexibility, just ask the Patriots they've been doing this for years, lock up the people you absolutely need (Tom Brady, Vince Wilfork, etc.) and re-cycle the other players by using them during their rookie deals.
Here's how the final face to face probably went: Rick: Well we exchanged numbers all day and it comes to a decision..we want you Ed, and of course we have a cap to work with to strengthen the team the right way and if you figure the state tax savings then you realize our 5.35 million per year final offer gets us in the middle of what we have budgeted to work with, and what your annual expectation is...lets commensurate the deal. Ed: alright, like I said my numbers are where they are and I know my worth. I'm going to be honest. I like a lot of things, but after 11 years, I have to digest this. This is a big decision and I feel like the mutual connection is there and I don't have plans at the immediate moment to shop this offer, but I want to get something done somewhere sooner than later as much as you. As we talked about, my agent will stay to fine tune the details if its possible, then we will go from there... To be cont.?
My guess is that while they might like Quin, he's not a guy they necessarily want to commit 5 years to (yeah, I know NFL contracts don't always run their course). If they can get a guy like Ed Reed for 2 years for similar money and draft a guy with a rookie contract in this draft or the next who will eventually take over, it ends up being a better deal. They get at least the same or better production over the same period of time for likely less money overall.
They have big contracts coming up with Cushing, Kareem, and of course JJ. I don't even want to think about how much JJ will command.
Quit tooting your own horn. Stick to your fake Royce White parody on twitter.. actually it sucks so stop that too.
