Dwight is back to being one of the best defenders in the NBA

    http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=espn:12129786

Here is JR's post later in this thread with the insider article:

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=9465373&postcount=22

Here are the stats quoted in the video:

Opponents shoot 28.1% when Dwight is within 2 feet. That is the lowest of any center in the NBA (Duncan=35.9%, Marc Gasol = 39.5%, Roy Hibbert = 44.5%)

Rockets as a whole give up 98.5 points / 100 possessions. Put otherwise, we are giving up 0.985 points per possession, which is good for second in the league to Golden state (96.2). For reference, the NBA average is 1.04.

The on / off numbers for Dwight are 94.4 points / 100 possessions when he is on the floor versus 101.8 points / 100 possessions when he is off the floor.

For reference, I looked it up, with Dwight on the floor, our 94.4 Defensive efficiency would be the best in the NBA. Let me say that again, with him on the floor (and his minutes overlap with Harden a lot, BTW), we have the NBA's BEST DEFFENSE.

With him off the floor, we are a slightly worse than average NBA defense.

So you go to buy a Ferrari and then disappointed because the trunk is not big enough for you to haul the furniture?

Meanwhile, we have a thread called "Does anyone else think Dwight Howard is coasting?".

If coasting Dwight is still DPOY potential, I'm looking forward to the playoffs Dwight again.

What does Pau Gasol think of him as a person though, that's all that really matters. I mean Kobe said he's soft so obviously he's an overpaid scrub.

I really never thought anyone was questioning his defensive effort.

    That's all fine and good.

But I don't like his body language.

Defensively, he's awesome. Offensively, he's giving up too easily when his, granted, erratic teammates fail to set him up properly.

To be honest, the rumors that he insists on being almost exclusively fed in the post bother me. Don't get me wrong, I'm still happy we got him and think his impact on the court is still worth 15-20m, but I just wish we could see a Dwight who plays to his strengths and opponents weaknesses. To me, that means PnR all the time except when he has a clear advantage in the post against his defender.

I wasn't too mad at the team for the loss away against the best team in the East, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't drooling to see us send waves of powerful Howard/Harden pick n rolls at their defense and see how they'd cope.

Obviously, we don't know for certain that Howard is the reason we don't see more PnR's with him involved, but we're looking at a team where several players have made huge sacrifices to their games (Harden, Smith, D-Mo) to fit in with the team, so Dwight sticks out like a sore thumb. Not because he's not been great for us, but because we could be more dangerous without even making a trade or changing the rotation.

Oh well. I guess we'll see. Maybe we'll roll this out in the playoffs. McHale has been more open to change this season.

Eye test isn't showing me a lot of effort, but he's a pretty special athlete and can make things look easy. Perhaps the results test is the only one that matters.

28.1% FG% against when Dwight is within 2 feet of the shooter? That's ridiculous.

Sorry I should of clarified. I meant in the national media. I know there's tons of hate on Dwight via the national media, but I don't recall anyone specifically calling out his defense.

Saw the video. Can anyone share the insider article that goes with it? Does it say the same thing?
