If you heard Jeff Van Gundy on ESPN yesterday talking about this issue. He said, when the Magic played the Celtics this season, their most inefficient scoring was when they just dumped the ball to Howard. Their most efficient way of scoring was to run and gun and pick n roll. I do have to agree, and I've seen all of the Magic-Celtics game this year. Howard can't score on above average post defenders.
Howard's game is pretty much entirely based on athleticism. He's relatively unskilled for his position (very poor touch around the basket, no post moves) and doesn't have great basketball IQ. All energy and athleticism... not much else. If he isn't satisfied with being a defensive specialist that gets most of his points off putbacks, he needs to prove he can develop at least one go to move in the post. The reason his FG% is so high is that he dunks the ball so often. If he took even a few "Yao-type" shots per game, his percentages would drop rapidly.
I know nothing about Stan Van Gundy and I have no opinion on this overall issue. But I just want to say that I find myself literally cringing every time ESPN/TNT mics up Stan in the huddle.
