This article is from a Florida paper, so take it with a grain of salt. If Sacramento releases him & he clears waivers, would you pursue him with the mid-level exception? He'd give us a sweet defensive presence at SG & veteran leadership. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basketball/heat/sfl-ira23jun23.column?coll=sfla-sports-heat At $6.25 million for next season, and on a team that has Hedo Turkoglu waiting in the wings, Kings guard Doug Christie has been mentioned as the Sacramento player most likely to go to avoid a luxury-tax apocalypse when Mike Bibby is extended a maximum-salary extension this summer. The preferred method of savings would be to lose Lawrence Funderburke and his $3.33 million. ...
sorry but the image from the WCF of him choking still lingers in my mind. and at 6 mil a year...sorry we already tried the 'one dimensional defensive minded player' card with shandon anderson...and well...you know how that went.
If they let Doug Christie go, the NBA should search the Sacramento King's offices for drugs. That team didn't play any defense until Christie came along, and there isn't a player on that team that can jumpstart their offense the way Christie can. I'd take Christie in a heart beat and drop him at SF. If they lose Christie they go from the #1 seed to the #4 seed. What makes them any different then the run-and-gun but defense-challenged Dallas Mavericks with Christie gone? And for the record one bad playoff game doesn't make the guy a choker and one-dimensional. He had ONE bad game! He is a solid scorer, awesome defender, and is fearless. Again it was ONE bad game! I'd take him on the Rockets in a heart beat, he doesn't need the ball to be successful. sorry we already tried the 'one dimensional defensive minded player' card with shandon anderson...and well...you know how that went. You're comparing Doug Christie to Shandon Anderson because of ONE bad playoff game? A one-dimensional defensive minded player!? Check out Christie's offensive numbers the last 2 years!
But, he's not one dimensional. Here's a link to his career stats from NBA.com. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/doug_christie/index.html?nav=page I was mistaken in my first post about him being waived. The NBA is not like the NFL, where once the player clears waivers, you can pick him up for the minimum. It's late & I'm tired. What would you be willing to trade for him? How about a sign & trade involving Willis? I'd bet that Willis would agree to it.
Doug Christie is a good player but in the biggest game of his career, he looked like a deer in headlights.
sorry but when a player is deemed 'a _______ specialist' he's one dimensional. a defensive specialist, a three point specialist...that just means 'oh you're not above average in everything else...but that one thing you do...you're special in that my friend'
The Kings are not going to release this guy. Christe and Webber connect well on the floor. He did choke, but hopefully he won't do it again.
I fully agree with RocksMillenium. I think Doug Christie is the type of player thats MIA on this team that can very well be one of the missing pieces to the puzzle that can help us get back to the playoffs. He's a very good defender in the passing lane and who also possesses such great anticipation for post entry passes. Even though Christie had a terrible game 7 he's still a winner.
I'll give them Glen Rice. They need an expiring contract in return, what with the luxery tax and Bibby's new contract. Match the salaries with another player, like Funderburke or something. They need to cut salary. Collier also fits what they're looking for. And Tmo. etc. Glen Rice for Christie and Funderburke or Christie for Tmo, Collier and some donuts.
the worst defensive perimeter team in the league (the Rockets) could definitely use a great perimeter defender.
dude fired a scud missile off the backboard in the biggest game of his career. that said, he's a much better player than shandn andersn. shandn had absolutely ZERO offense. christie can hit a jumper...just not in the clutch. and he is an above average defender. that, to me, makes him an EXCELLENT bench player and spot starter. for the mid level - i'd take him. just be sure to reinforce the backboards if we ever make it to the WCF and he's in the game for an important shot.
I decided to look up Christie's numbers since people are calling him a "defensive specialist" and comparing him to Shandon Anderson Doug Christie 12 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 4.2 apg, 2 spg, 46% from the field, 35.2% 3pt shooting, 85% FT shooting is NOT a one-dimensional "defensive specialist".
He had ONE bad game. Everybody has a bad game. Remember, the Rockets had a bad Game 7 vs the Sonics in 1993. The guy is a GREAT defender, his defense is what jumpstarted the Kings defense. And the guy is a clutch player, he had a pretty good playoff run. He had one bad game, but even Kobe threw up 2 airballs in a big game. Jordan has turned the ball over in clutch situations. In fact, Jordan kind of burned out against the Pistons during his original playoff runs, and he was in about the same stage in his career as Christie. You have to take the good with the bad. If you want to dump a guy on the bench and bury his contribution because of one bad game you'll never get battle tested players for a playoff run.
If we can get Doug Christie, we have to do it. he is a ball hawk, a defensive stoppper. We can score, we can;t defend. Christie plays 48 minutes a game, is well conditioned and is a team player. WE NEED HIM.
dude RMill, verse was actually praising Christie, and his analysis of Doug is spot on imo. Christie is an awesome roleplayer, or "weak-link" if you will. He is in the perfect system and team for his skills right now, and I do not think Sactown is going to get rid of him. I've followed him on and off since he was in NY, and I gotta say this has been his best O year, in part due to having a clearly defined role in the sactown offensive system. Very consistant for much of the year, and actually made teams pay for giving him the open jumper.
