It seems like Melo wouldnt be up for playing for the Rockets unless Yao, Brooks, and Martin are on board according to this article from the Denver Post. And it won’t be. There is a tidal wave of momentum pushing the Nuggets’ face of the franchise, Carmelo Anthony, out of Denver. But while the chances of the Nuggets retaining one of the NBA’s best players look slim right now, if the front office comes out swinging it can give the organization a fighting chance. The execs are off to a good start, having met with Anthony in Los Angeles already last weekend. Think of that as a groundwork meeting, designed to set up subsequent talks. Essentially, the Nuggets have to show that they are more than just a money machine; more than $65 million over three years. As Anthony told me in the middle of last season, and has repeated several times to anyone who asks the question, he’d like to see the team headed in a direction that results in the chance to play for a title. Consistently. But right now, all he sees are question marks. In two years from now, here’s who the Nuggets will have still signed: Al Harrington, Chris Andersen, Renaldo Balkman and Ty Lawson. And that’s it. Good players, but nothing that screams championship or even division title. Their coach, George Karl, who has a deal through this season, may or may not be there. Even Karl probably like to see a solid, contending-type foundation in place also before he commits to more years. So what the Nuggets need to establish is a realistic, executable plan that keeps them relevant in the Western Conference race, and that will start with a general manager Anthony respects. If he signs now, the final year of the offer will be Anthony’s 11th season. A double-digit number in the career category usually indicates things are winding down. There is no way Anthony wants to look around him in 2013 and see no hope for a title and the prime of his career gone by. It’s why the prospect of playing with Yao and Kevin Martin and Aaron Brooks in Houston is so enticing. It’s why playing with his good friend Amare Stoudemire and potentially Chris Paul back home in New York is even more enticing. The Nuggets must have Anthony’s wife, La La, on board. Somehow they’re probably going to have to show that she can still take full advantage of entertainment opportunities while being based in Denver, and perhaps show they can help her achieve that. I’m no expert in the entertainment field, but it’s not rocket science that Denver isn’t L.A. or New York. It would be a tough sell, and yet it’s one the Nuggets are probably going to have to attempt to make. Anthony is making a movie right now, and he’s doing it while a member of the Nuggets. It’s a small precedent, but one the team could build on. Obviously, the dollars work in the team’s favor. Anthony isn’t going to make an average $21.6 million per year if he leaves, particularly with a new collective bargaining agreement that is expected to curb some of the higher salaries. Also working in the team’s favor is Anthony’s mindset. His reluctance to sign is in no way due to animosity with the organization or any of the people in it. He’s not itching to get out of town. He’s doing what any of us would, and that’s weigh his options to determine what’s best for him and his family. And that’s reasonable. That’s a key component because it means he’ll be willing to listen. And as he’s already demonstrated, he is. Essentially, the Nuggets are recruiting Carmelo Anthony. And as with a high schooler looking to find the right college fit, the Nuggets are going to have to prove themselves capable of satisfying what the player needs in all areas of his life. If they can, he’ll stay. If they can’t, then we’ll watch one of the best players in this franchise’s history finish his career in a different team’s uniform.
Battier/Melo on the wings would probably win more games than a Martin/Melo lineup. I really don't think you can have a good enough defense with Brooks, Martin, and Melo on the court together the majority of the time. Swap out Brooks for Billups or trade Martin (or, obviously, don't trade for Melo) and we would be set.
So basically, Melo only has interest in playing for Houston, if we can somehow keep Yao, Brooks and Martin in the trade? This article says nothing about Melo wanting to play only with Yao, Martin and Brooks. If anything, it points out how ignorant the writer is in assuming that trading Melo will still leave Yao Martin and Brooks together when it is likely not case.
I would part with either Brooks (preferably) or Martin to get Melo. I'm still betting on a three way deal that sends Brooks somewhere other than Denver and lands us Anthony.
If Melo is so determined to have teams keep their key players, how on earth would the clippers or nets expect him to sign an extension?
i would prefer to keep martin AND brooks as opposed to Hill AND/OR budinger. I would ship out any combination of players and/or draft picks and future ones just to keep our current starting lineup intact- add Melo boyyyy
Exactly. We already know that we have the best team of the Melo suitors, and Melo knows it. At this point, it's about working the actual deal with Denver, Anthony will not block it because Martin isn't going to be here. That would actually be really stupid considering that New Jersey would likewise have to at least give up Devin Harris if not Brook, New York would have to part with Gallo, etc.
Bima put out a very decent trade involving Charlotte, Denver and us that didnt require us giving up any of them....
I wouldn't mind giving up battier or kevin martin in a deal to aquire Carmelo Anthony IF Morey could some how snatch Xavier Henry from Memphis, hes good defender and a great shooting guard that makes up for the loss, some what.
