Donald Trump's NATO comments are the scariest thing he's said

Given the choice of eating two turds, I rather eat the one we have now (a big one to say the least) than enduring an unending troop allocated quagmire in Syria where every regional power there has a vested interest for us to fail.

I don't think the redline with questionable foundations was the problem. More like the determination to regime change Assad (through actions like training pre- and current ISIS rebels through the CIA) without thinking two steps deeper into how that'd play out and who would be a viable stability agent for Syria.

I don't expect gung-ho Hillary to make things better but my expectations are exceedingly low for her in reducing the military industrial complex

War Crimes is already a common occurrence of US foreign policy has been for decades.

 

Not as a matter of policy. They do take place and have taken place. They haven't been stated policy.

 

Not saying that I agree with Trump, but alot of the NATO partners are not holding up their part of the bargain though. Most of the NATO countries spend a laughably low % of GDP on defense. If you take out the US, the combined GDP of the other NATO members is larger than that of the US GDP but their combined defense spending is less than 1/2 of that of ours. They know they can get away with this because of the promised protection from us.

 

Say what you want about Trump, but do you think we would even be talking about this had he not made his comments?

 

Again, any problems we have with our NATO allies should be addressed. They can be addressed discreetly in a way that doesn't signal to Putin it's okay to invade. It doesn't take a super experienced statesmen to know that much, just one with more sense than Trump.

 

We should be talking about it with the other members of NATO, not broadcasting to Putin that he won't have any repercussions should he invade a nation we are bound by treaty to support.

About how to keep alliances? About how to get Putin to do some of the dirty work in Syria without the US having to do it all and Putin never even realized it?

Only the most naive of idiots would believe that Putin 'trumped' Obama during his presidency. Ask a Russian citizen how their economy is performing... I'm sure Putin's military overreach and haphazard deployment of his military along with the sanctions have no bearing on that predicament.
