TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Disgraced former NBA referee Tim Donaghy is back behind bars. Donaghy was being held without bond Tuesday for a federal rule violation, according to Hillsborough County jail records. FILE -- In this July 29, 2008 file photo, former NBA referee Tim Donaghy exits Brooklyn federal court following his sentencing in New York. Donaghy is back behind bars. According to Hillsborough County jail records, Donaghy was being held without bond Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, for a federal rule violation. Details were not available. A message left Tuesday at the office of Donaghy’s attorney was not immediately returned. Donaghy was given a 15-month sentence last year after he said he took money from a professional gambler in exchange for inside tips on games—including games he worked. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce. Donaghy was moved to a halfway house this year after serving part his sentence in a federal prison camp. He was scheduled for release in October. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-bettingprobe-donaghy&prov=ap&type=lgns Dude can't catch a break (not that he deserves one)
Another article says his infraction is not showing up for work (he's a salesman now). I'm curious about the circumstances that led to him not showing up for work.
He is just the scapegoat. I am sure he's not the only corrupt refs in the NBA. Dick Bavetta should be in there too.
I have a feeling he is just the fall guy for a bigger problem. Were there is smoke there is usually fire. These things are not often ran so well over years of nobody knowing and at such a large scale without a couple of individuals taking part usually. Yet the NBA would like us to believe he is the sole mastermind of fixing games and single handidly without help turned a couple of scores in the games by himself and turned wins into losses in the playoffs by himself? The situation sounds deeper.
