Sports betting now legal in Delaware

    http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/05/14/delaware-legalizes-sports-betting/

Most of us NFL fans who think we are smart enough to bet on games can do so easily anyway with a credit card and an internet connection.

What I think is hilarious is that the NFL is actually playing the angle that their games cannot be considered chance.

or that skill can't be discounted with odds...that doesn't even make sense and would apply just as well to sports betting in nevada.

Yes, although it seems sometimes the oddsmakers have point spreads down to an exact science it still doesn't mean with the existence of parity that during the first 3 weeks of the season any team that was good last year can suck and vice versa.

Why does the NFL oppose sports gambling in Delaware?

The simple answer is... The NFL doesn't get a cut.

Vegas is established, they have to deal with Vegas already.

They will do everything they can to tie this up in court so more states don't legalize sports betting.

They'll say its about the integrity of the game and how they are trying to assure their employees don't get caught up scandals, but really its about the Benjamins.

    Sorry, missed this.
But... Why should they care enough to fight it so much?

They won't lose money, but it doesn't sit well with them if more and more organizations are making money off their product via legalization of betting on sports.

I don't quite understand why such the adamant fight that NFL puts up over sports betting. Without it, their revenue would go way down, since sports betting is a multi-billion dollar industry, and tons of people would have no incentive to watch a crap game like the Lions vs Bengals, if they had no money on it.

I would argue that sports gambling is a factor that makes sports so popular in America. I would argue that the NFL can owe a lot of their current popularity (in in turn, a lot of their dollars) directly to the sports gambling market.

If I was running the NFL, I would turn a blind eye to this, while secretly happy that there is another avenue to market my game to a wider audience and get bigger TV contracts.

Fran Tarkenton or Bobby Douglass, possibly even Randall Cunningham.

I dont think they really have to turn a blind eye and be secretly happy about it. Just dont try to fight it...are there a bunch of people who are upset that sports betting is going to be allowed in delaware and want the NFL to step in and try to stop it, besides the NFL themselves?

its so widely done online and in vegas, its pretty much a joke the NFL is fighting it

So, how long until this proliferates to other states?

And then how much longer until the NFL has their own betting side venture?

I'm a 'the world is just many shades of gray... usually.' sort of guy, but in this, I'm a 100% or 0%: I don't understand why they are making a big deal out of this, with Vegas and all the online websites already doing it. Just like I don't understand how alcohol and cigarettes are legal and not mar1juana. Or prostitution is legal in Reno (Any where else? not that I'm looking, but as far as I know it is just there.)

    Lobbyists?

The NFL is being silly - you know all those games recently played in London, including a possible super bowl? You can walk into any gambing parlour in England and bet on those games and it didn't seem to bother the league then.
