The first hour of the first day that the news broke was the worst, but here's wishing Yao a speedy and healthy recovery, hoping he gets the best medical care, whether it be oriental or occidental, ancient and modern, or a blend of the two... Yao hitting the herbs with a vegeance, coming back next year with a beard and goatee setup to keep the evil spirits away from his footing.

This year is now dedicated to at least making the playoffs and killing off the monkey, ie, getting out of the first round - something that TMac will have to face up to again. It really IS on him this time! Just do it...

Second opinion; Herman Memrial docs dont kow their s**t. The mistook another 7'6 dude's xray for Yao's. Yao's coming back next Monday.

And the workaholic Yao Ming, less than 24 hours from his painful season-ending injury annoucenment, also showed up in Toyota Centre, working on his strength and conditioning in the gym. He also spent time to take a commercial for the Houston Rockets after his strength and conditioning exercises.

According to Yao Ming, from now to the day that decision made about whether he needs to go under the knife, he will continue coming to Toyota Centre to work on his strength and conditioning so as to keep his form and shape. He also plans to be there in Toyota Centre on the bench to rave, support and cheer his team mates on February 29 in the game versus Memphis Grizzlies.

Yao Ming did not show up in Toyota Centre this time for his strength and conditioning exercises.

According to the Rockets' Director of Media Relationship, Luis Nelson, Yao Ming had flew to Charlotte, North Carolina and will meet and seek second opinion from Dr. Robert B. Anderson on February 28 on which is the best option to get him back onto the court as soon as possible: to take surgery or conservative treatment on his stress fracture.

Luis Neslon told the reporters that Yao Ming will make it back to Houston on the 29th to be there at night on the bench to support, cheer and rave for his team mates against the Memphis Grizzlies.

The one to blame, to overwork yao is Chinese National Team. Yes, is yao obligation to play for his national team. But do you really need to play yao against Melbourne Tigers every summers? How many unneccessary exhibition games Yao need to play each summer? These games are all about making money than playing basketball. How many unrest summers yao has had? 6,7,8? After this coming Olympics, what do they have again? Qualification for Asian games, world championships,m asian championships and next olympics and on and on. Yao is basically wont rest for the next 4 summers!

So tell me again, who the hell over work Yao Ming?

It is going to be very hard on big fella's body over the few years. He's not 23 anymore. He's far from old, but he's over 300 pounds and there's a ton of mileage on him. I really, really hope he listens to his body and if something starts to hurt, rest it! I'd much rather see him miss 20 single games than 20 straight.

That said, Yao was getting way too many minutes this season. Yao has improved every single season in the NBA (props!!!) until this one. Minutes up, rebounds marginally up, scoring average down, shot attempts and free attempts down, FG% down. Sounds to me like he's getting a little warn out. I'd personally rather watch get numbers like his third season..18.3 points, 55% FG (!!!), 8.4 rebounds, 2 blocks in only 30 minutes. The national team thing isn't going away and he's gonna play a TON of basketball...we don't need 22 and 11 from him. I so wish he was still here, but at least we finally get to see Scola. Third scorer? Check.

At 7-foot-6 inches, Yao Ming is undoubtedly huge. But in his native China, he is larger than life.

News that he is suffering a stress injury in his foot which will end his NBA season has sent shockwaves through China.

"This is an earthquake for fans," said Beijing sports reporter Sunny Zhang.

Yao is the face of the Beijing Olympics, the center of the Chinese sports world, and a national treasure. Even the thought that he may not recover in time to represent China at the Games has the country on edge.

The Chinese Basketball Association convened an urgent meeting to discuss alternative plans, but officials are hopeful their star center will be in the starting lineup come August 8.

At a news conference Bai Xilin, manager of the Chinese national team said, "We will overcome the difficulties and continue to do well in our preparation training for the Beijing Olympics."

The Chinese blogosphere was flooded with comments from worried fans and Yao supporters. "I would rather lose my job or girlfriend," read one blog, "than lose Yao Ming from the Olympics." Another blogger lamented, "This is the winter of Chinese basketball."

One sports newspaper pointed the finger at the Houston Rockets for overplaying Yao. (In Houston, some fans turned the tables and insinuated that the Chinese pressured Yao to sit out the season so he could rest up for the Games).

But none seemed more disappointed than the gentle giant himself. At a Houston news conference, Yao said, "If I cannot play in the Olympics for my country this time, it will be the biggest loss in my career to right now."

At a popular Beijing sports bar, the Goose & Duck, Yao supporter Li Ang said, "He is an idol for many young people in China. Many Chinese consider Yao Ming's injury a big blow."

The NBA enjoyed popularity in China long before Yao Ming came onto the scene, but the All-Star center has inspired a generation of young basketball hopefuls.

"Yao Ming in many ways is a little Johnny Appleseed and a little Tiger Woods and a little Michael Jordan," says ABC sports analyst Christine Brennan. "Put all that together and that's what this man means to China."

Sunny Zhang says it goes beyond sport. "He is a national hero. His success overseas is encouraging to many Chinese people," she says. "His injury worries us because it would be like a fallen hero."

All the worry may end up being premature. Doctors say Yao likely faces a three to four month recovery after surgery, which would give him time to recover for the Olympics. Some have even suggested that the injury may be a blessing in disguise because Yao will have more time to rest before the Games than he would have had he finished the season with the Rockets.

Yao said at the Rockets news conference that he doesn't even want to think about how disappointed his Chinese fans would be if he had to sit out the games in his home country. The hopes of a nation of 1.3 billion are pinned on him, but Yao said when his injury was announced to his team, "it was quiet. Like nobody was there, and you just feel alone."

When six-time NBA all-star Yao Ming revealed on Tuesday that he’d sustained a season-ending stress fracture below the small toe of his left foot, Houston Rockets fans weren’t alone in their anguish.

A nation of one billion-plus wept with them.

Yao is arguably China’s most visible Olympic athlete, and although the national team boasts other NBA-caliber players, the country’s hopes for its first medal in basketball rested squarely on the Shanghai giant’s impossibly broad shoulders. Until now.

At Tuesday’s press conference, the Rockets announced that Yao would be sidelined for three to four months before beginning full rehabilitation training. That leaves the 27-year-old with only a month or two to regain his competitive edge before the Olympic Games begin August 8 in Beijing.

Looking dejected, his voice deeper than usual as if hoarse from crying, Yao said, "If I cannot play in the Olympics for my country, it would be the biggest loss of my career." Afterwards, Houston reporters were quick to criticize Yao’s comments, accusing the 7-foot-6 center of putting his country before his employer.

Granted, Rockets fans are understandably disappointed. Houston has strung together a 13-game winning streak in the last month and was largely perceived as back in playoff contention in the highly competitive Western Conference prior to Yao’s announcement.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time injuries have forced Yao to ride the pine. In his previous two seasons he’s missed 59 games due to an assortment of injuries, compared to the one game he missed during his first three seasons in the NBA. And he broke the same foot once before in 2006.

Chinese orthopedic experts remain optimistic that Yao will be ready in time for the Olympics. Qiao Wei, medical education director of Beijing University of Physical Education, told a People’s Daily reporter on Thursday that he thinks, “there is enough time for Yao to be ready in August. He will spend three months in bed and one month for basic rehabilitation, then he can play on the court.”

However, Qiao echoed the complaints of Chinese medical experts that the fracture was a direct result of the Rockets’ failure to find an adequate substitute for Yao, which required him to play for more time than is healthy for a man of his size: "Yao could not have avoided the injury given his size and a 38-minute average playing time per game. It is not because of a hit or a stretch during the game, it is a long-time thing. I think it is a reflection of his hectic season."

Yao and the Rockets still haven’t decided whether to put his foot in a cast or under a surgeon’s knife. Now all Chinese fans can do is hold their collective breath and pray that Yao can stage a comeback of messianic proportions. His size 22 shoes are just too big for anyone else to fill.
