Timing of this seems strange. Was Hopkins given some indication that he would not get the Watt/Mercilus treatment? Mercilus got his extension in May sure, but Watt got his late in preseason.
maybe Hopkins felt if they were going to extend him, they should do it now before he starts camp and risks injury
And this is going to be the most important training camp for the offense in the history of the franchise. BoB has to be livid over this. Distractions...
It was mentioned on th radio that the Texans weren't planning on renegotiating the contract till next year. Deandre is probably thinking his stock might not get higher than it is right now. Especially if 1 or 2 of the other receivers turn out to be great and Hopkins' stats go down a little bit. From the Texans perspective, I understand why you want to wait till next year. From Hopkins perspective, I understand why he doesn't. He is going to try to force their hand to do it now instead of waiting till later. We will see if it works.
Because he's been putting up numbers with ****ty qbs, he is obviously an elite wr and wants to be paid as such. The Texans csn pay him, this whole refuse to negotiate thing is petty, but they made Andre come back before they renegotiated with him, so DeAndre is gonna have to get his black dick over there. It took J.J til like September I think, yeah Merciless was early but he had no leverage. With Watt being out more will be asked of the offense and that means more touchdowns from Hopkins, theres absolutely no downside to just paying him
Holding out when you have 2 years left on your contract? Wonderful. JJ Watt back surgery, awful re-signing of Rick Smith, Andre signing with the Titans, brand new unproven QB, and one of our team leaders makes it all worse by not even wanting to join the team.
This is the new agents talking in his ear. Never good when new agents come on board. The Astros are going to have to deal with this with Altuve, and his hiring of Scott Boras. The Astros are in a much STRONGER position because of the way baseball contracts are and there is no salary cap. They will redo Altuve to make him happy.....and never let him hit the FA market. As for Hopkins...he is a strong position because of the youth of the WR corp. After Cecil Shorts, you have 1-2nd year player (who didnt play much until the end of the season) and a bunch of rookies. With Watt uncertain, no way the Texan's offense can be in that position when it needs to click from the get-go.
We don't know if that's actually the case, that initial tweet has already been shown to get one fact wrong.
But imagine how much more lethal the combo of Osweiler and Hopkins can be if they get significant camp time together.
