WARNING!! Sick stuff, could mess up your day http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jFuaD3fLpJLZE3qob6VoJIXUqbJQD9F07VB80
Exactly. What a disgusting human being. The alleged "muslim" world needs to wake up and cast out this sick, horrendous attitude. Basically nothing will happen to this guy while if his wife had gone out without a headscarf she would probably be beaten half to death. I feel so sick. At this moment, before the rage dies down, it would be difficult to stop me beating this guy to the brink of death with a baseball bat. Scum. What's more insane about all this is that he would agree to the same deal for his sister. HIS OWN SISTER. Eliminate this animal from our gene pool. I take that back. Animals have supremely higher ethics. Just sick, sick.
Sad story, unfortunately children are abused sexually and otherwise all over this world. I was reading a story the other day about how there is a worldwide epidemic of trafficking in children in sexual manner and otherwise (like slavery or forced labor). That story claimed that the number of children falling into these trafficking rings number in the millions. MILLIONS! Just freaking sad man. Between widespread murders and bloodshed in countless conflicts around the world, and human actions in supposed civil societies during times of peace, human beings are increasingly exposing themselves as the true scum of the earth. It is ironic, yet not so surprising, that we are literally staging our own demise by the very way we live. The joke is on us, nature shall take its course.
No we're not. If anything, the percentage of these occurrences likely decreased a great deal with modernization of the past century. It was MUCH, MUCH more prevalent and worse in more ancient times. You don't hear about it because it was more accepted back then(and still do today in certain parts). Plus it's not the stuff you document. I mean, back in the days when books are handwritten, and where only the rich and the powerful can subsidize scholars and writers, what do you think gets written about? Government Policies? Religious values? Or whether the young and the poor are abused?
Who the hell cares about a single dead Yemeni child? She wasn't American so why would anyone here give a crap.

It may have been more prevalent before, although that is highly unlikely given the fact that much of this exploitation going on today is grounded in the reality of extreme wealth inequalities between countries AND within almost all developing countries in the world. Only in the 20th century did you start hearing about the reality of sex tourism and child prostitution in places as close by as Mexico. Industrialization and globalization has reinforced much of this inequality and made it easier for people to exploit one another based on economic disparities. Economic exploitation, I would argue, has accelerated in the last 60 years, because the wealth gap itself has accelerated. Regardless, it is not really relevant whether or not it was more prevalent in the past, the fact is it is still quite prevalent and that says something about the human condition. Heck, we have a global economic system that is very much BASED on a hierarchical system that requires the poor nations to play their proper role, meaning providing cheap labor based on the sweatshop system of production. All I am saying is lets not kid ourselves.
Must be that whole sense of social justice. And since we care about social justice, we must be socialists. And since we're socialists, we must also be pro-Hitler and pro-Stalin. Since we're pro-Hitler, we must be condoning the holocaust. Thus, since we find this story revolting and grieve for the child and her parents, we condone the holocaust. QED.
It's part of the problem but I don't believe this form of child abuse is as prevalent in other countries with similar poverty levels. This is something Yemeni society has to confront.
"Yemeni society", from what I understand, is a bit of an oxymoron. Its more like a bunch of groups who temporarily have decided to tolerate each other until a better option comes along. In fact, from every account I've heard/read, it pretty much sounds like a libertarian's paradise.
You think child abuse is limited to Yemen? If so, then you must not have read the tens of thousands of documented cases of prostitution rings exploiting women and children in almost every corner or the developing world (eastern Europe and Russia, south and southeastern Asia, Latin America, and others). It is the underbelly of global commerce that few acknowledge. Heck, there are documented cases of prostitution rings being set up nearby American and UN military bases overseas, and many of them employ underage girls and charge more for them than more 'mature' women with the full knowledge of everyone involved. Enloe had a good book documenting in detail some of these cases.
I'm not sure if you're aware, but this is somewhat racist and, as pointed out, false. The poverty has led to a lack of development - lack of development in ethics, science, technology, knowledge, information, schooling, etc. I assure you that this is not prevalent in Yemenis who are raised elsewhere and proud of their Yemeni heritage.
It is definitely more prevalent in some countries than others. It is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar too common in Yemen to give away child brides and rape them. The clear distinction that has to be made here is that this is not the same as a child rapist. This is, if possible, infinitely more sick. This is marriage. To this guy, he is meeting an ethical standard while doing this. He is happy for his friend to do the same to the sister which he gave away to the friend. He thinks God has approved his actions. Child rapists aren't like this. I'm still so disgusted.
