And a team flush with cash can suck for over 100 years.

Not just that, but before the last two years it had been 6 years since Oakland ha a record above .500, so if that is the best example the author can come up with, count me out on that "system"

Also, even if you can be low payroll and win, and yes it does happen, but I don't want to root for Springer and Cosart and Appel and Correa and whoever else for only several years, and then watch them go to the Yankees or Rangers or whoever else while we have to turn to the "next big thing"...as a fan, I want to see guys like Springer and Correa or whoever turns into stars, play out their careers here in Houston.

Our city has been luck with guys like Biggio and Bagwell and Dream, even guys like Berkman and Oswalt who ended their careers elsewhere spent all of their true prime years right here....that won't ever happen again if we can't compete financially

Hopefully the Astros get bought out of CSN H soon I seriously doubt whatever they do get "competes" with everyone in their division considering all that has transpired and that they were behind LA and DFW in the TVMarket rankings.

So did they hide the MFN clause from Crane or not? I always assumed that Crane was just so eager to buy a team he may have overlooked some things. But the way that story is written at the end with terms like "implausible" to communicate all the details of the Comcast subscriber fee, makes me think they just told Crane the value and not the MFN clause.

So Mclane killed the farm system and left us with aging players on bad contracts and has the balls to call the team absymal under Crane as though there was an alternative for us to be in the playoffs had Jimmy played his cards right.....

gtfo Uncle Grandpa. You're the worst owner in the history of Houston sports and continue to cement your legacy.

clauses are part of a contractual document and not a verbal assurance. It's pretty far fetched that the MFN either wasn't in the contract or that it wasn't in documents sent over to Crane to review.

Every contract I have ever negotiated, the dialogue that goes in to finalizing terms and conditions doesnt wind up in the executed contract. That's what McLane is saying. Anytime you read or negotiate a contract you look hard at revenue generating clauses. If I'm in Crane's shoes the MFN is a big time red flag.

I agree and assumed that was the case. But the way Barron portrays their defense makes it appear as though they may have kept the documentation about MFN away from Crane. Otherwise why not say: "The comcast-CSN contract was sent to you, it's not our fault you missed the MFN clause or what it might mean for revenue"

I didn't read in to it that way. Just kind of figured McLane was referring to the back and forth dialogue that lead to the carriage rates that were initially established. It wasn't plausible to recant every single conversation is how I read it.

I get your point, but having a player "work things out" at the major league level is often a bad idea. Ask the Mariners how that has worked with Justin Smoak.

UPDATE 3/15: After this story appeared, Astros general counsel Giles Kibbe sent me an email noting a paragraph in the McLane motion to dismiss in which McLane’s attorneys said, “There may have been, as (Houston Baseball Partners) alleges … a disagreement (negotiation) between Comcast, on the one side, and the teams on the other, about the rate ut the result of the transaction was reflected in the HRSN material contracts. The agreement (and disagrement) had not changed by the time of closing.”

In his email, Kibbe said the above paragraph was the first time that McLane or his attorneys had acknowledged a disagreement over pricing for CSN Houston.

He added: “Rather than telling us that Comcast did not believe the rates were achievable, McLane Champions and Comcast did the opposite – they represented that the rates were prepared and validated by Comcast. When we purchased the team, we knew that we were acquiring the worst major league and minor league system in MLB. What we did not know was that McLane Champions and Comcast actively concealed the fundamental flaws in the network business model.

“Despite this, our ownership group is very happy to have purchased the team. We are proud of the work we have done in building the #1 ranked minor league system. We will continue working hard to build a great franchise for our fans and the city of Houston. And, we will continue to put that same effort into fixing the pre-existing network problem so that our fans can watch the Astros and Rockets.”

Is it just me, or are McLane's comments incredibly uncalled for? Part of the reason why the team is where it is (AL West, last place, low attendance, etc) was due to his horrible contract management in an effort to remain mediocre (all to sell the team). He stripped the team of any and all prospects just to prop up the resale value of the franchise.

From a trial attorney who specialize in business and sports litigation who was tweeting with Barron:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p><a href="https://twitter.com/dfbarron">@dfbarron</a> If Crane has any case at all it would be against his own lawyers. Only a fool would believe what he claims he relied upon</p>&mdash; Gene Egdorf (@GeneEgdorf) <a href="https://twitter.com/GeneEgdorf/statuses/444952402811031553">March 15, 2014</a></blockquote>

Been saying that all along. Crane bought in to the team and figured be could be a bully and get his way.

He got screwed by Mclane, screwed by his own lawyers, and is getting screwed by Comcast. Time to take your ball and go home, you lost. You bought a crap used car, had it checked out by a mechanic, he said it was good, you bought it, it was bad. Live and learn. Stop dragging this thing through the mud, your hurting the fans
