The DP population though isn't indicative of the general population.
On one hand much bigger ratio of older people (so higher mortality rate)

on the other hand they have had the best possible medical care (lower mortality rate)
and they were pretty affluent so there weren't (m)any with unchecked preexisting conditions like unchecked diabetes, HIV, kindey disease (lower mortality rate).
Unfortunately not even the RO can be calculated based on a cruise ship beause of the special conditions. (Plumpling, ventliation, close quarters etc).

@malakas Whats your day to day life like in Greece at the moment? Is it business as usual or are people sheltered inside?

Another cruise ship. Don't repeat Japan's mistake.

Twenty-one people aboard a cruise ship that was barred from docking in San Francisco have tested positive for coronavirus, U.S. officials said on Friday, as half a dozen states reported their first cases of the fast-spreading respiratory disease.

Vice President Mike Pence, who is running the White House’s response to the outbreak, said at a news conference that 19 crew members and two passengers out of 46 people tested so far on the Grand Princess ship had the virus.

He said the vessel with about 3,400 passengers and crew would be taken to a non-commercial port where everyone on board would be tested.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he would rather have passengers remain on board the vessel, but that he would let others make the decision whether to let the passengers disembark.

“I’d rather have them stay on, personally, but I fully understand if they want to take them off,” Trump told reporters after touring the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta.

Keeping passengers quarantined aboard a coronavirus-hit ship proved to be a disastrous strategy in Japan, leading to one of the world’s biggest outbreaks.

We are under attack by hordes of "invaders" so ..praying for good weather to be saved by the outbreak and praying for bad weather so not get more "invaders".

I have been under so much underlying stress that I can't even watch any bball games or do any of my hobbies.

This is old but worth a read.

In the cloud: How coughs and sneezes float farther than you think

Novel study uncovers the way coughs and sneezes stay airborne for long distances.Watch Video

Peter Dizikes | MIT News Office
    April 8, 2014

The next time you feel a sneeze coming on, raise your elbow to cover up that multiphase turbulent buoyant cloud you’re about to expel.

That’s right: A novel study by MIT researchers shows that coughs and sneezes have associated gas clouds that keep their potentially infectious droplets aloft over much greater distances than previously realized.

“When you cough or sneeze, you see the droplets, or feel them if someone sneezes on you,” says John Bush, a professor of applied mathematics at MIT, and co-author of a new paper on the subject. “But you don’t see the cloud, the invisible gas phase. The influence of this gas cloud is to extend the range of the individual droplets, particularly the small ones.”

Indeed, the study finds, the smaller droplets that emerge in a cough or sneeze may travel five to 200 times further than they would if those droplets simply moved as groups of unconnected particles — which is what previous estimates had assumed. The tendency of these droplets to stay airborne, resuspended by gas clouds, means that ventilation systems may be more prone to transmitting potentially infectious particles than had been suspected.

Not to go all D&D, but the Q&A our president did at the CDC was horrific. Truly bad.

If you can stomach it, watch tweets 3, 5, 6, 7, & 8 in this thread. In my view, 7, which is the second one here, is the worst, but it is debatable.

The whole state of Texas can only test 30 people a day.
    This is the capabillity?
    WTF!

Okay these people should pack their bags and go home. They are criminally negligent.

There is not being all prepared and then there is having less capabillity than the Vatican city.

I am outraged on your behalf because this is simply an ourtight crime. Ridiculous!

At this point I have to wonder if they are intentionally dragging their feet to artificially hide numbers for fear it will hurt their poll numbers.

I know they are incompetent in the White House, but genuine incompetence to this degree would be hard to fathom.

They've always been more interested in appearances than actual facts. Intentionally not providing tests to hide the real numbers would fit right into that.

No other first world country had more time and resources to prepare for this and we’ve been completely caught with our pants down.

We might have been able to get more White House intervention earlier on if they hadn’t been having to deal with a U.S. Senate trial thanks to the Democrats‘ fixation on impeachment.

So the only thing standing between America acting like like a 1st world country and Zimbabwe is a U.S Senate trial?

    Please STFU with your politics.
Do you understand how serious this is or do you not?

We are way past the point of comparing health care systems, or socialism or whatever.
We are at the point of comparing between a CEO and a homeless hobo living on the ghetto with 1 cent in his pocket.

THIS is the protection your country is offering you and all you know to talk about is a Senate trial?
    Are you stupid?

Just making an observation. Whatever one’s view on the merits of what took place, the fact of the matter is that a Senate trial commands the intense focus of the White House from the President to the Chief of Staff on down. It’s just the plain simple truth. Less time focused on a Senate trial means less time dealing with subpoenas, testimony, winning floor votes, etc, and greater ability for the White House to focus on the major issues of the day for the American people that really do merit full attention, like this virus.

So I have some not so great news...

I have a family member who is head of respiratory at a prominent hospital I’ll say in the Houston area. They are affiliated with 13 other hospitals.

So I text her yesterday around noon. She told me she was in a meeting that would last until 5pm. Ended up that it was a meeting regarding coronavirus.

Story is she told me that the virus is everywhere around us. All 13 hospitals have many patients that have tested positive. They cannot announce anything because they have to send off samples to the CDC so they can test them as well. Once they test and find them to be positive they can start announcing it.

She said buckle up and do what you can to prevent because it’s not going away for a while. So here we go, it seems to be on.

Go visit your gf, trust me. If you love your gf, you gotta go bro. I'd go in a heartbeat, but only if you have no underlying condition. Take care, send us some pictures.....

    What observation are you making?
Has you public health reached the levels of a joke because of a recent only Senate trial?
Is a Senate trial a nuclear disaster or maybe a World War 3?

Other countries are accused of being REactive instead of PROactive while the USA the wealthiest country in the world isnt even ACTIVE.

Observe now instead how the virus will be widespread in all hospitals and there will be no healthy doctor to treat you.
Public health is not a matter of politics.
it is a matter of safety even more important than terrorism.

It is YOU who will suffer. And me.
You are not impervious to the virus just because you are rich or american. Or a republican.
The virus will not ask to see your passport and your bank account.
    Do you understand this?

I am sorry to say but with this level of joke measures this is expected.

The whole point of taking measures after prevention and containment is delay.

    You HAVE to delay for
    1) Flu season to be over as much as possible so ICU beds to empty
    2) Delay the spread so the healthcare system will not be overwhelmed at once but as gradual as possible so more people can find treatment
    3) Protect the sensitive groups of the population like older people or chronic patients inside the hospitals

    4) Protect the healthcare providers who are the most vulnerable to infection

With no tests, no effort of containment and detection there is nothing strange if by next week most hospitals have endemic outbreaks and half of the nurses and staff are in quarantine.

Then who will treat Donald Trump?
