actually probably the best example yet. Jimi's star spangled banner might qualify, too, if just for sheer effect... though that might cross lines for some.
Add Marvin Gaye's National Anthem to the list <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qfWCJ0K3djw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KPevEQ5NFlk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Also . .Whitney's version <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/N_lCmBvYMRs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Rocket River

I know you're joking, but I thought this was interesting. The late great's Johnny Cash and Jeff Buckley took these songs to another level for me... great thread btw. I have two more- in addition to great covers of great songs, i really like obscure covers of obscure songs. the first was written by Terry Reid and Graham Nash, and is know by two different names, Without Expression and/or Horses Through a Rainstorm. Terry Reid is an interesting guy, he was given a chance to be the lead singer of what became Led Zeppelin, but passed it up, and recommended Robert Plant for the gig. He also turned down the lead singer role in Deep Purple, which went instead to Ian Gillan. The song was recorded by the Hollies in the late 60s, and also by CSNY as part of the Deja Vu sessions, but neither was released until years later, the CSNY version on the early 90s CSN box set, as Horses Through a Rainstorm. Reid's solo version was released on his first album, and is quite good: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/133AlNpsopA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> it next appeared as the "B" side to Ridin' the Storm out by pre- Kevin Cronin REO Speedwagon. to the extent the song is played at all, it's this version you're most likely to hear on the radio: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/FR3Ex1QdXI0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> the song was later released as a new track on John Cougar Mellencamp's greatest hits album, Best That I Could Be: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3-NdNnZZndo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> and then lastly, CSNY, which is quite different, and where you can her Crosby's spoken intro, which was later used as the intro to Almost Cut My Hair on Deja Vu: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MV3xdoPjFuM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
the 2nd song is rarer still, and the cover, by a well know but unlikely band, even more obscure. Dallas was released as Steely Dan's first single in 1972, but sold poorly, and was never included on any commercial album (Can't Buy a Thrill came later in '72, but did not include the song. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Euf716oQx-w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> The Dan's version features Jeff Baxter on steel, which is perhaps why it appealed to Poco, who included the track on Head Over Heels, their second post-Richie Furay album, which also included Keep On Tryin'. Rusty Young plays a great steel solo. oddly, the track also includes an orchestra, which strikes me as completely superfluous. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KDNQ57xd_r0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
This cover isn't better, I just prefer it. It's Strawberry Switchblade covering the VU's Sunday Morning. Spoiler <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uCtiN678n8M?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Here's some trivia involving covers. The following recording is a cover of Love Potion No. 9 sung in Chinese that directly influenced Nirvana's About A Girl. Their producer on Bleach bought the record as a kid while on a family holiday in Singapore. He played them the song as a suggestion and they liked it.
