Just wanted to see if there's any well traveled BBS'ers. Let me preface my post by saying, that aside from the US and most of Europe, the world is corrupt. You wouldn't believe some of the things I've seen.

Gotta start with my least favorite country,

    • Indonesia-The corruption/bribery there is unbelievable. To put it in perspective, the customs officials will bribe you. They'll tell you something is "wrong" with your passport, and they'd hate to see you get deported, but they can take care of it for a certain fee, usually about 500$. I had been through this before, so I told them I only had 50$ on me. They proceed to search me, find nothing, take the 50, and let me be on my way.

Indonesia is a complete sh*t hole. Of course this is all IMHO.
    • Dubai: I really like Dubai, and it attracts alot of people from Europe, Russia, and Asia. They really try and promote tourism there ie: golfing, boat racing, horse racing, casinos. It's roughly the size of Houston, and I urge you to go there if you somehow end up in that area of the world.
    • Italy: Rome's beautiful, but I didn't like it as much as Venice or Sicily. I got robbed in Rome because they're are pick pockets galore, and they are good...trust me.
    • Colombia: Beautiful country... it's a shame it's so corrupted.
    • Argentina
    • Brazil
    • Jordan
    • Saudi Arabia
    • Kuwait
    • Vietnam
    • Thailand
    • Japan: Japan is so congested, and the people there work non-stop. I couldn't live the kind of lifestyle that many do there.
    • China
    • Borneo: right on the equator, I never stopped sweating the 10 days I was there. Then there's always the cannibals that are walking amongst you. While there, I went to a shrunken head museum. The way the native cannibals killed their victims was pretty gruesome.

They'd nail their victims to a tree and start skinning them alive. Then, they'd throw their body in an antpile. They would boil the heads, and use some ingredient, I forget the name, to make the head shrink. Pretty wierd stuff. I got a few Beetlejuice flashbacks to say the least.
    • Malaysia
    • Egypt: Cairo is DIRTY, and the Great pyramids sucked IMO. They're not as big as you would have imagined, and even taking into consideration when they were built, and how magnificent a feat it was, they still suck.

FYI, the Great Pyramids were moved at one time in history.
    • India: the people are very friendly, and most speak English as a result of their ties to the British, and it's a nice place to visit if you ever get the chance.
Just wanted to say something about the movie Tomb Raider, which depicts the Ganges River as this beautiful little river with pretty little flowers floating on it. It is NOTHING like that! It smells HORRIBLE, because they use that river for all purposes.

I've been to almost all of Europe, except Luxembourg and a couple others. You know the other countries laugh when they see the representatives from Luxembourg enter the room. They're like the Rhode Island of Europe [IMG]

Switzerland and Scotland are beautiful countries.

    Remember, this is all IMO.

On a side note, does anyone know the name of the country that Bin Laden hides out in? It's under Islamic rule, and I think it's something like Turkministan?

    Wow

    Very impressive list Tacoma.

    I have been to:

Mexico-Yeah All the way across the border. Mexico City wasn't the nicest place, but Cancun was of course great.

India-My parents were both born in India, so some of our relatives still live there. Its very poverty-stricken in the larger cities. Calcutta is one of the most painful experiences ever. In terms of tourism, there are some nice islands off the tip of India, there are some great sites such as the Taj Majal, the Pink City, and a Fort that is about 5-10 miles from the Taj Majal(Not sure of the Name)

England-Pretty nice people, alot to do, but London is very dirty. The Tower of London is cool, but alot of the attractions are things you can look at for a couple minutes, and have had enough:Stonehenge, King Arthur's grave, Bath(Although the areas around the actual Bath place are fun to walk around). Westminister, birthplace of Shakespeare, and any of the castles open to the public are good...

Italy-Beatiful place. But Venice and Rome were the only places we went, and I honestly don't remember too much.

Canada- [IMG] Vancouver was beatiful while we were there, but I heard it gets very rainy. Luckily it didn't rain at all the week we were there. Montreal had some interesting French parts, but really nothing special. Whistler is the best skiing you can find. Fresh snow all the time, and not even very cold, I went skiing in a t-shirt and windpants on the warmest day we were there. And of course, the Canadian Side of Niagara(Horse Shoe)is far better looking than our side.

Calcutta is one of the most painful experiences ever.

Gotta agree with you there, and Bombay too.

Fadeaway, common sense should have told you that statement didn't apply to Canada.

    Anyway, here's my short list:

I don't even like to go to Arkansas or Oklahoma. I can't imagine going all the way to another country.

Singapore - I went to school there for a semester when my stepmom was a lawyer for Mobil. Really nice island/city/country of about 2 mil people. Close to the equator but 80 degrees all year round. And the seafood was the best I've ever had. It was the first time I had had crawfish. The tails were 2-3 inces long. I came home, went to the Rajin Cajun, ordered crawfish and said what the hell is this?

No one likes going to Arkansas or Oklahoma.

My list is very short :
    Mexico
    Ireland
    England

Thats it. Ireland was by far and away the best though. If I had to live any other place in the world besides Texas, it would be Ireland. Good food too.

I'm fortunate to be very well-traveled. My mom works for British Airways; those flight benefits are the best.

    England
    Scotland
    Wales
    Ireland
    Spain
    German
    Austria
    Italy
    France
    Poland
    Denmark
    Netherlands
    Africa
    Japan

I've been all over the US as well, and most of the above places I've been several times.

Good thread. I think that the good ole' USA is one of the most corrupt places in the world (especially given how rich it is here), so corruption in other countries hasn't phased me thus far. I am sure I can find some dodgy places, however. Anyway, my list:

France (Paris, Bourges, Carcasonne, Loire Valley, Lille, Rouen, Lyon)- studied there in 1995 and 1998. I think the people there get a bad rap. I found most French people kind, especially if you spoke their language (however badly, as in my case). Really beautiful there, as well.

UK (London, Wales, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Bath, Sailsbury)-I have visited there three times. Best pop culture in the world. The countryside is lovely, too.

China (Beijing, Shanghai)- I went to school there in 1997. Overwhelmingly beautiful, complex, crowded and slightly disturbing. I did not meet as many people there as I have in other countries. Still, quite fascinating.

Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice)- I couldn't love Italy more. The art, history and beauty of the people makes this, perhaps, my favorite place. My fiance and I are going on our honeymoon there in December.

Amsterdam- Love this place! I can't remember as much as I would like to..really high, really cold and really moved by the Anne Frank house.

Switzerland (Geneva)-I didn't get to see as much of this country as I would have liked, but it was beautiful and featured a great fireworks show over Lake Geneva when I was there.

New Zealand- Stunningly beautiful place. It reminded me of Alaska, strangely enough. I lived in Alaska, outside of Anchorage, for five years as a teen and Auckland and the surrounding country reminded me of it there. My fiance is a Kiwi, so we are planning on moving there soon.

That's all for me. I think the national parks of the US are as beautiful as any place anywhere, too. Thanks for indulging this long post,

    -Elvis!

Mexico (Mexico City has some nice areas, and I thought the pyramids were pretty cool. Don't know how they compare to the Egyptian ones).

Canada (Vancouver is beautiful in the summer)

England (wasn't too impressed with the food, but I liked most of the people I met)

Belgium (great beer and chocolate, they like Americans a little more than the French do)
Luxembourg (took about an hour to see the place!)

Germany (couldn't find a restaurant that took credit cards)

    France (best food ever)

Italy (Florence and Venice were terrific, so were the Alps. Didn't make it to Rome).

Venezuela (great scenery, and enjoyed the outdoors too [IMG] )

Hong Kong (LOTS of Rolls Royces)

    Taiwan (great food)

Mexico...Since I grew up along the border in south Texas, we went to Mexico almost every vacation. I've been to a ton of cities in Mexico, many more than once:
Mexico City-dirty, gritty and most fascinating! I lived there for almost a year.
    Guadalajara-beautiful, the buildings, the women!
Veracruz-Gulfcoast wonder. The spaniards 1st landed there. Spanish influence architecture.
    Tampico-dirty little gulf oil city
Villahermoso(State of Tabasco)-the hottest place I've ever been in my life!
Guanajuato-Absolutely wonderful, old, italian-like(or so they say) city. One of my favorites
Patzquaro(state of Michoacan)-go to Lake Janitzio and the island Janitzio. Amazing! Supposedly a popular honeymoon spot for Mexicans.
Real de Catorce-before Brad Pitt made "The Mexican" I had been there several times in the 80's. HMMP! The drive out there is most amazing!!
Zacatecas-very nice high sierra type of old silver mining city. Quiet and clean!
Cuernavaca-1hr outside on D.F.nice drive, wonderful city and food.
Morelia-nice colonial city (but then again , most of them are [IMG]
San Miguel de Allende Hated it! [IMG] the most turistie, Americanesque city I've ever been to in Mexico in my life! Although very beautiful, its "Gringolandia"...go to these other cities I've mentioned for a true Mexico experience and get away from American culture for a week, geeez!!
Oh, I still want to make it to the Chihuahuan desert. I hear there is a Copper Canyon train ride you can take and that it is wonderful. Also, to baja one day! [IMG]
