No this isn't a racist thread. Simply looking to provoke some debate and discussion.

If Yao Ming wasn't from Asia and say a Caucasian or African Male from America, would he still be a Rocket?

I'm simply stating swap Yaos ethnicity/color with that of another. While still retaining his injury riddled self.

This basically comes down to the point of are we simply keeping Yao because of his Chinese origin and large financial boost we receive.

Honestly I think if Yao was of another descent he would of been gone a long time ago.

It just seems unreal that any franchise would keep insisting on relying on someone who hasn't played a full season in over half a decade if it wasn't purely for financial benefit while sacrificing the team as a whole.

I think so, he still is really tall with a great work ethic and a unique set of skills.

No reason not to give it one more try this season.

It's not controversial to recognize that Yao has value as a cultural icon beyond his abilities as a basketball player. That's just a fact.

Let's face it, Yao's a great guy but the reason the Rockets have put their last however many seasons in a state of confusion over and over again is because of how much money Yao generates from China. If that money wasn't a factor, the risk started to far outweigh the rewards a long time ago when it became obvious that Yao wasn't going to lead this team anywhere.

I do feel that some of my black friends hate on yao ming because he's not black. Does that make them racists?

Anyone else get the same vibe?

The Rockets would have drafted him with the #1 choice, giving his height and potential, remember Shawn Bradley? But I think he would have been traded away late.

Yao was the last player of the Rudy T regime. He was chosen.

What if he were of a more NBA traditional european or african american descent but had the exact same financial draw?

I'm Asian, specifically Chinese, and the answer is no, he would not. Yao hasn't done anything with his career that Al Jefferson or Rik Smits haven't done ( give or take a few stats here and there ). Keeping him now is painfully obvious that he's mostly here for marketing purposes.

That being said, I want him here because he is Chinese and that is why I want to watch him as a Rocket.

Of course he'd still be a rocket. Big 7'6 guys with skills don't grow on trees. When healthy, Yao has a huge impact on the game not to mention he is a high character guy, excellent teammate, and works his butt off in practice. No organization would let go of a model employee like that.
