For those interested, a statistical comparison of TMac's previous 2 years with Ariza this year:

    * PPS: Points Per Shot = PTS/FGA
    ^ AFG%: Adjusted Field Goal Percentage = [(PTS - FTM)/FGA]/2
AFG% measures shooting efficiency by taking into account the total points a player produces through his field goal attempts. The intention of this adjustment is largely to evaluate the impact of three-point shooting. For example, if Shaquille O'Neal has 3-5 FG, all two-point shots for 6 points, then his AFG% = [(6/5)]/2 = .600. Meanwhile, if Ray Allen is 2-5 FG, but his 2 FGM are both three-pointers for 6 points, then his AFG% = [(6/5)]/2 = .600

Yep, they both sucked at scoring the ball.

This reminds me of when people would throw stat comparisons between David Carr and an actual good QB trying to show that "Carr wasn't the problem."

This is partly why I dont want to ever see them share the court together.

Except Mcgrady could actually distribute and create for others. Plus he can dribble the ball.

ariza's offensive stats suck more than a one-legged mcgrady, despite playing in a faster tempo offense. say it ain't so trevor.

You can't compare Ariza and T-mac.

They are both ball stoppers in the offense... If you watch the Rockets offense, its pass-pass and then Ariza gets it and then he cant decide between shooting or dribbling and then he turns it over...or he will decide to pass but its too late and defenders have recovered...

Ariza can be much better if he learns to make quicker decisions with the ball...

Guessed you missed the last statistical category shown.

Why are we comparing an MLE-paid role player to a former scoring champion and perennial All-Star?

I've never seen these comparisons, but when did Carr ever had comparable stats to good QBs ever(except maybe the 2004 season)? His YPA stat has consistently been unbelivably god awful.

But then, Ariza actually plays defense.

Not all that great. He gambles a lot which gets the whole team out of position and he seems to get lost player cuts a lot. I remember the Utah game earlier this year drove me nuts because Trevor kept getting lost and the Jazz players were getting wide open layups due to this.

This is true...of course Ariza can play defense and moves off the ball, so it is still a wash...

His gambles pay off a lot more times than it backfires. He played this same style in LA too, and Morey's numbers convinced him that Ariza's defense alone was worth the MLE.

So yeah, I'd say that's a lot better defense than what T-Mac has provided in recent years.

He doesn't play defense all that well. I thought he was going to be a much better defensive player, but boy does he need to learn some skills from Battier. Hell, watching Budinger seems to play better defense at times and he is just a rookie (but he has learned a lot from Battier).

Second, he moves off the ball, but he doesn't move enough if you ask me which is why he finds himself shooting dumb shots all the time.

    Really?

You remember that last Blazer game where he attempted to reach in to steal the ball from Roy but instead got burned. I'm sure if I went through some other games I could find the many times those gambles don't work.

I mean yes, Trevor plays much better defense than McGrady that's a fact but it doesn't overcome McGrady's offensive production. McGrady might be inefficient, but his ability to create off the dribble, command attention and find open players is much greater than Ariza's defense.

I agree completely, Ariza has been less than stellar, and I know Morey keeps talking about they got a deal, but to me, he is not even playing as good as Von did last year.

Lets compare a $23 million player and his stats against a player making the MLE and hope that the $23 million player looks better!!
