Grizzlies Have Yet To Speak To Swift
    Commercial Appeal - 07/26 - 12:38 PM EST
Mike Fratello confirmmed that the club has yet to speak to Stromile Swift, who was re-acquired by the Grizzlies as part of a draft day trade for Rudy Gay.

Swift's agent, Andy Miller, told The Commercial Appeal earlier this month that his client would "make this work."

Tip-ins: West and Fratello confirmed that they have yet to speak with forward/center Stromile Swift. The team re-acquired Swift along with Gay in a draft-day trade that sent Shane Battier to Houston. Swift has not returned more than a couple of phone messages left by West and Fratello. Swift's agent, Andy Miller, told The Commercial Appeal earlier this month that his client would "make this work." ... The Griz waived guard Anthony Roberson and are apparently prepared to satisfy Fratello's desire to add a veteran point guard. Said West, who had referred to Roberson as the best shooter on the team: "We really appreciate Anthony's effort and professionalism this past year. He is a very talented guard with a bright future in professional basketball, and we wish him the very best." ... West acknowledged that there still is "concern" about veteran point guard Damon Stoudamire's rehabilitation from knee surgery. Team brass will watch Stoudamire work out today to get an update on his progress.

doesn't mean the trade is off. Think Jim Jackson to new orleans, he did'nt report but the trade was completed and Wesley was in houston.

    Its over.

I wonder if I would want Swift and Gay back? I guess I would... too bad that won't happen.

I thought Swift had to report within 2 days of the trade being completed or the trade would be rescinded? WTH is the rule exactly anyone? Thanks in advance. :)

I don't think anyone thought it was off. At least not the guy who posted this.

As a few have already said, this is nothing more than funny/interesting. It has zero impact on the trade -- that deal is done. There's no going back now, for either team. The deal was Battier-for-Rudy Gay anyway ... Swift was a cap dump for the Rockets. He wasn't able to alter the deal even when it was changeable. Jerry West obviously is saying the right things about Swift, but they did not "want" him.

Point being, if Swift jumped off a cliff tomorrow, West would say, "Meh ... more time for A.J."

Can't help but feel sorry for Stro. Many of us had high hope of him at the beginning of the last season when he signed on with the Rockets. I am sure everyone was awestruck by his amazing athleticism and ferocious dunks. Stro, Yao, and TMac never really got chance to play significant minutes together on court. Stats do show however Stro and Yao together tend to produce more for the Rockets than for opposing teams. Despite a few gaffes that were blown out of proportions by his detractors, I believe Stro is well liked by many Clutch fans and his value is mostly recognized -- as evident in the huge uproar caused by the Gay-Swift for Battier trade.

Well Stro, it's unfortunate you don't get a fair chance to flourish under JVG's system but good luck to you in the rest of your NBA career. Maybe some day you will come back to Rockets again.

He hasn't returned more than a couple of phone messages? My god, what a non-story. It's the offseason, he doesn't need to talk to the team for another month. He has returned messages anyway. Apparently, he hasn't called when West or Fratello were in the office. That's a far cry from not reporting.

Call me crazy but if some unexpected turn of events take place and the Grizzlies end up dumping him I would welcome him back if he came for cheap.

I agree. He would be good to have back although I don't see why he would come back. He chose to play in Houston (for less money) but then we traded him along with Rudy Gay back to Memphis.

But if he did come back that would be pretty nice. We need more highlight dunks. :)

Doesn't he have to report for a physical? Its obvious he is not happy, and will probably pull a Jim Jackson, until he goes anywhere but Memphis.

Will his actions have any effect on his salary assuming he does not report? Does a player have the leverage to do this and still be paid?

Memphis Grizzlies 2006-2007. Now there's a disastrous season waiting to happen if I ever saw one.

I hope Rudy turns out to be stud for them eventually. It's going to get worse before it gets better.

I don't know why he would be upset, seemed to get more time in memphis to begin with.

Right now he can do what he wants since there is nowhere to report to in the offseason....but I believe a player can be fined in addition to losing money from the contract if he doesn't report. Basically, you don't get your paycheck and you get fined for it...Swift won't do that and the Griz don't want it getting ugly either because they know if the situation gets publicly unruly then they will get diminshed value for Swift in the trade market. If a smart GM knows your desperate, they will use that as leverage in a trade.

If the Griz didn't already have a deal in place with Swift's future team, they will probably smooth the waters enough to put him back on the roster for the first half of the season but he won't spend the second half of the season in a Griz uniform...
