I was having a random thought (thanks in large part to the sport season we are in) about college alumni composition of NBA players now.

By my count, Duke leads the pack with 9 players (10 if you add Jay Williams who is only out as a result of that motorcycle accident).

Next I believe is Maryland with 5 or 6? Georgetown has 5? Kentucky? UNC? Uconn?

I am right? Do you have a different count? What do you make of this?

I remember SI doing a study back in 1996 or so of which college had the most alums in the NBA, and Alabama took the crown because, I believe, 92% of NBA players had attended Alabama at some point.

PS. In a game of 3-on-3, I bet Kentucky alums will be the best in NBA (to qualify, a program must have at least 3 players in the NBA).

This is an article form rpiratings.com, which contains a list from 2004-2005 opening day rosters:

    http://www.rpiratings.com/NBA.html

Where the NBA Players Come From

Kentucky, Duke, and UConn lead 128 D-I teams with the most players on 2004-2005 NBA Opening-Day Rosters

Kentucky, Duke, and Connecticut lead the list of 128 Division I teams that have at least one former player on 2004-2005 NBA opening-day rosters. Kentucky leads the way with 13 former players now drawing an NBA paycheck, with Duke having 10 players, and Connecticut has 9 players wearing an NBA uniform. CBN has been tracking the origin of NBA players on NBA opening-day rosters since the 1986-1987 season, and there are four categories of players in our current list. Those categories are: 1) NBA players that attended Division I colleges; 2) NBA players that attended non-Division I colleges; 3) NBA players that did not attend college (high school players); and 4) Foreign players that have no U.S. college experience. Foreign players that played for U.S. colleges are shown in the college list rather than the foreign players list. That explains the discrepancy between the number of foreign players shown in our list the number of "international players" reported in various media outlets.

The numbers in this list are interesting to compare with those that were compiled for the 1986-1987 season (see the January 26, 1987 issue of Basketball Weekly titled "ACC, Big Ten Most Generous with NBA" by Jim Sukup). Back then there were 23 teams in the NBA (compared with 30 today), there were a total of 301 players on NBA opening-day rosters (compared with 438 on the 2004-05 opening-day), and there was no list of the number of foreign players in the league (although several foreign players on those NBA rosters had played for U.S. colleges). UCLA headed the top of the colleges with 9 former players in the NBA, and the ACC was at the top of the conference list with 34 players on the 1986-87 NBA opening-day roster.

The ACC leads once again leads all conferences in producing NBA players as it has for many consecutive years. This season the ACC has 48 former players in the NBA, an average of 4.36 NBA players for each team in the conference, compared to last year's 5.67 NBA players per team. The difference is that ACC newcomers Miami and Virginia Tech have only two NBA players between them, which dropped the average substantially. This season, no conference has every team represented in the NBA, but the Big 12, SEC, and Big Ten are each missing only a single team with NBA representation. Conference USA has 12 of 14 teams represented in the NBA and the Pac-10 has 8 of 10, while the Big East has 9 of 12 teams represented. Seven conference have just one team represented in the NBA and five conferences have no NBA players on 2004-05 NBA opening-day rosters. There are 52 foreign players on NBA opening-day rosters, or 11.9% of the NBA total, 28 players that went straight from high school to the NBA (6.4%), and 14 players that attended non-Division I colleges.

If any of our younger readers are thinking of a long NBA career, the last table on this page will be of interest. It shows the cumulative percentage of and the number of NBA players with years of NBA experience. The first thing that is striking is that over half (50.2%) of NBA players are rookies or have 1, 2, or 3 years of NBA experience. Are you convinced that you will have a long, productive NBA career? This is very unlikely because only 32 players on 2004-05 NBA opening-day rosters (7.3%) have more than 10 years of NBA experience, and only 2 have more than 15 years of experience! The fact is that player turnover in the NBA is fast and furious, and only exceptional talent lasts in the NBA for any length of time. Kevin Willis of the Atlanta Hawks is the lone elder statesman in the NBA this season. This Michigan State product has 19 years of NBA experience starting this season, and our annual "tip of the hat" is due him for his NBA longevity. Next in line is UCLA's Reggie Miller of the Indiana Pacers, with 17 years of NBA experience. It is widely thought that Miller will retire following this season.

A new table for this year shows the average player age and the average player 's NBA experience for each NBA team. The average NBA player at the start of the 2004-05 season was 27.0 years old and had 4.4 years of NBA experience. Players on the Minnesota Timberwolves averaged 29.2 years old, making them the oldest NBA team, while the New York Knicks, with 6.7 years of NBA experience per player, had the most average experience of any NBA team. The Phoenix Suns were the youngest NBA team in terms of average age, checking in at 24.3 years old. However, the Utah Jazz have the least experience of any NBA team, with a roster that averages 1.4 years of NBA experience. It will be interesting to compare these figures with how well the teams do throughout this NBA season.

The following lists are based upon NBA Opening-Day rosters for the 2004-05 season. The conference list includes only current school affiliations for the 2004-05 season. Team and conference lists include players on the active NBA roster list (only 12 active players are allowed per NBA team at any given time) along with those on the injured and suspended lists. There were 77 players on the injured list, and 1 player was on the suspended list, at the start of the 2004-2005 NBA season.
