[ClutchFans] Why DeAndre Jordan to the Rockets Shouldn’t (and Probably Won’t) Happen

You still need to operate under the salary cap rules. A willingness to pay luxury tax alone does not enable a team to spend on player salaries without limit.

Anyone that thinks it is likely is off base. If LeBron decides he wants to come to Houston then Morey may be able to make it happen with Anderson and Gordon and Tucker possibly being moved. Still no guarantees that can be done.

The good news is the Rockets don’t have to gut their team first and then find out what Paul and LeBron want to do.

Regardless of whether it is LeBron or someone else, I think this summer the Rockets try their best to add another piece before Capela is signed long term.

    @BimaThug:

Assuming DJ doesn't get traded by the deadline, couldn't he waive his player option for next year and request a buyout? Then he could sign with us for the vet minimum for the rest of this year, right?

If this happened, he would be a free agent at the end of the year... At that point, what would be the max that we could offer him?

You could trade Anderson, Tucker, and Black for Lebron today no need to include Gordon. Problem is of course getting Cleveland to agree to that pu pu platter or a very complicated multi team trade that finds someone willing to take Ryno.

Why would the Clippers do that? They're squarely in the hunt for a playoff spot right now, plus they might still have interest in re-signing him. That, or they could possibly gain assets in a sign-and-trade deal involving Jordan this summer. Just waiving one of their best players (who does not seem to be causing any problems in the locker room) would be pure stupidity on their part.

No chance of the Clippers giving him a buyout unless he throws a tantrum worse than Dwight Howard did back in Orlando or Carmelo Anthony back in Denver. Clippers are the 8 seed right now and they seem set on fielding a playoff team this season regardless of the odds they don't go anywhere.

Target THIS season needs to be Nerlens Noel instead - he's younger, cheaper and more obtainable without losing core of team, including Capela.

Black, rights to Gentile/Llull and two 2nds should do it. Mavs have irresponsibly devalued the asset and Morey should pounce.

Agreed, it makes much more sense for the Clippers to get value for him. BUT, it makes the most sense for DJ to act cool right now and then if he doesn't get traded at the deadline, he switches into disgruntled mode to force the buyout. He tells the Clips that he's going to opt out and not resign with them this summer. The Clips are then left with two options... either keep DJ for the rest of the year and get no value for him, or agree to a buyout, save some money and avoid the negativity of having a disgruntled player. This may be a low chance scenario, but it's still a viable scenario IMO.

If the Clippers don't have plans to pay Lou Will, then he could be gone at the trade deadline. If Lou Will goes, they won't make the playoffs, thus paving the way for the above scenario to be more likely to happen.

Let's assume it happens and we get DJ on a vet min contract for the rest of the year. Then next summer we would be able to sign or trade for Lebron, and then exceed the cap to resign CP/DJ/Clint, right?

Did you not read the article?

Anderson would need to be part of a bigger trade for LeBron for salary matching purposes.

Yes I read the article after I posted this. Basically we’d have to find somebody willing to buy out our mistake with Anderson.

Essentially it’s going to be like last off season where teams hang up laughing. Our only hope seems to be if LBJ actually wants to be here, somebody is willing (or dumb enough) to Pay Ryno without making take back salary, or we magically construct a multi-team trade to end all team trades.

What I’m gathering from all this is that Anderson and his enormous contract has once again made it near impossible for the Rockets to upgrade.

Would you say that is a fair assumption on my part?

CP3 cap hold will greatly limit the Rockets' cap room to sign LeBron outright. And in your scenario, the Rockets would only have Non-Bird rights to Jordan, limiting them to offering no more than 120% of the vet minimum salary.

That's a somewhat fair assumption, although they can still move Anderson if they're willing to part with enough assets to do so. They were not so willing in order to get Melo last summer. They probably would be in order to get LeBron.

I agree they’d be willing. Would probably take quite a bit since we don’t have any leverage.

Ah, that's right... I forgot about the 120% :( Clint + DJ seems like a pipedream I guess. Thanks for the info.
